« on: February 10, 2011, 02:44:37 PM »

First of all, I'm VRCC member 13089 and been a member since Sept 2001. Although I've not posted much, I log on every day to this site and have come to know a lot of the membership from their posts. I've suffered what was diagnosed as a torn rotator cuff and had surgery for it 4 years ago. The surgery failed and i was left with limited use of my right arm. I saw the best shoulder ortho in Toronto (some say Canada) and had a followup surgery in September 2010 to lessen the pain and regain some range of motion. The shoulder was repaired and my latissimus dorsi transferred to operate the shoulder and, while my pain is a bit less and range of motion is improved, my ACTIVE range has decreased and I have less than 45 degrees to the front and to the outside. Therefore it is with much sadness that I've decided to sell my beloved Valkyrie and stop riding altogether before someone gets hurt. I'll probably still watch this board as you've all become cyber friends of mine. If you'll be looking for a nice Y2K tourer with less than 70,000 km on it that is in mint condition, I'll be posting mine in the classifieds in March or April (when the frikking snow melts) and I can get the bike out to wash and wax it 1 last time. I'll surely miss the bike and the great rides it's taken me and my wife on.  Cry

Sorry to hear that the pain is causing you to give up riding. I had a torn rotator cuff repaired 8 years ago and mine is perfect-no pain or loss of motion.

Please Bandit rides with one arm.

You can do it and don't let father time or oh my God I might have a wreck bestow you a farewell.

Don't sell it ride it.

Sounds like you have cabin fever.

Take two aspirin and wax the damn thing and ride it this spring.

The Valkyrie makes one hell of a fine trike, and trikes are a hell of a lot of fun, despite what someone who has never been on one might try and tell you.

Rake the front end 6 degrees, and you could probably steer with your fingers.  If you're interested at all, read some on www.triketalk.com

Sidecarrick,
First of all I usually stay out of these kind of post.  To ride is a personal choice, I normally don't get involved.  Like Marcel aka Big Al stated, I do ride with one arm and I can relate to your rotatorcuff surgery, having some of the same surgery done on my only remaining left arm some 20 years ago.  It is a personal choice and no I will not recommend an air shifter or foot clutch or to tryke it.  That again is your personal choice.  It's in your head, if you want to ride, ride.  I have rode with the best on this board and most of them I call dear friends.  With that being said, the choice is yours.  Now I will get off my stump.

I've quit riding several times since I started in 69 or 70. And if you're not comfortable with riding stepping away for a while or for good is probably the thing to do. But, as Al said, Bandit is one of the best riders I have ever seen and he does it with one arm. That doesn't mean that I or you could do the same but it does mean it's possible.

Thanks all for your encouragement and understanding. I have carefully considered all my options and feel this decision is for the best. My major malfunction is that I can't even reach the bars with my right hand and have absolutely no strength in that arm, so if there is any sort of emergency there could really be a problem. I'm not even sure yet if I will be able to return to work. I will truly miss riding, but after 35 accident- free years it's time to hang it up and move on. To all of you- thanks for the comradery I've been show and- ride while you can, because you never know when it can all end. Peace, my brothers.    Embarrassed

Sorry to hear that you will give up riding.  Sounds like you have thought this through and
are good with your decision.

Going through PT right now for a torn rotator cuff.  It is going well but didn't start out
that way.  They put me on a aggressive program to get my motion back and now starting
to work on the strength.  I told my therapists that I needed to be ready to ride come spring.

Good luck to you, stick around.

At some point, all of us will face such a decision, the time when we should not be riding our beloved Valkyrie anymore, have to go to a smaller bike or simply stop riding altogether.  I congratulate you on having the courage to look at this situation clearly and make the hard decision.

Prayers to you for your continued recovery.

Due to my knees I had to give up the Valkyrie and after two tries I ended up with a lighter Vstrom.
That might work awhile for me.

One thing that I'll never do is try to persuade some one else to keep riding .  I have no idea of their problems in making that decision.  A rider has to have some mighty strong personal reasons to stop and that's for him to decide.  I'm not in his moccasins (or Boots) so I don't give my opinion.

Besides my opinion is only worth .02

I hate to hear someone having to give up something they love to do. You are smart to make the decission to quit before a bad wreck. Good luck to you and hope you will stick around this place!
Seeing your handle is "sidecarrick" does this mean you already ride a hack. If so post some pictures of it, I have a sidecar in storage,  that one day I may try to attach to a bike.

TO be fair, I quit riding on the street in 1986, but I kept on racing motocross for

3 more years.

So as I thought the street was not safe in my terms but racing seemed to me the safer

choice.

Started back in 2004 , July to be specific.

130,000 trouble free miles later still riding.

DOn't think I have not tempted the Grim Reaper through those last few years, cause I have.

With a few people that will Amen that statement.

But you should think twice and look to your maker for guidance.

Hope you keep rolling.
