Why I Have a Gun

My grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's

Life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and

Usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'."

I don't have a gun to kill people. I have a gun to keep from being

Killed.

I don't have a gun to scare people. I have a gun because sometimes

This world can be a scary place.

I don't have a gun because I'm paranoid. I have a gun because there

Are real threats in the world.

I don't have a gun because I'm evil. I have a gun because I have

Lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't have a gun because I hate the government. I have a gun

Because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't have a gun because I'm angry. I have a gun so that I don't

Have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be

Prepared.

I don't have a gun because I want to shoot someone. I have a gun

Because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a

Sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't have a gun because I'm a cowboy. I have a gun because, when

I die and go to Heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't have a gun to make me feel like a man. I have a gun because

Men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't have a gun because I feel inadequate. I have a gun because

Unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't have a gun because I love it. I have a gun because I love

Life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

"Police Protection" is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect

Themselves. Police do not protect you from crime; they usually just

Investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to

Clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old

To take an ass whoopin'.

Bought my first handgun (Cold King Cobra) ~25 yrs ago, sold it ~18 years ago, 2 young kids in the house and felt I could use $$ better elsewhere. I feel differently now, wish I had kept it, but you do what you have to do at the time.

Bought my 2nd handgun last month, Taurus Model 605, 357 mag, completed CCH course this weekend.

Feels good!

Already thinking about my next one, a 9mm?

Have always been pretty ambivalent towards guns.  Find myself getting more interested in having one now that I'm getting too old to take an ass whoopin'

Thinking about a Ruger LCP.

bingo! the extreme libbies that want you disarmed like to impugn your manhood. I've heard them say things like 'why do you have a gun? does it make you feel like a man? is it an extension of your manhood?"

they wish. I'm a barrel chested, thick necked, red blooded alpha male with or without my gun. that parkerized/blued/stainless steel weapon doesn't change a thing

i use to have three guns; a piece of crap 22 jennings, an excellent 22 ruger target mark 2, and a 92fs beretta 9mm.  the ruger saved my life once, that's when i went with the beretta, more stopping power!!  sold the piece of crap jennings for what i bought it for ($50) sold the ruger and beretta when my son was born.  heard too many stories of kids getting their hands on the gun and killing someone.  even though i always kept them on a trigger lock, didn't want to take a chance.  i miss that ruger, was the best, most accurate target pistol i ever shot (not that i'm an expert.)

Ditto....me too.  Besides gettin' too old to take an ass whoopin', the world seems to be turning into a cesspool more and more everyday where one oughta be prepared to defend one's self even at the most mundane of places now-a-days.

i have owned guns since i was a little kid and my dad taught how too use them SAFELY. I couldn't imagine being without one. They are nothing more than a tool and shouldn't be used by anyone who doesn't know how. That being said I think all americans have a duty to be ready to protect themselves and thier family and if your not willing and want others to do it for you shame on you.

What amazing timing to see this thread.......

This morning on the TV news there was a 13 year old girl and her dad on the couch in the studio.  Seems this guy broke into their house and killed someone (or more,....I turned it on a bit late) and then kidnapped her for 4 days.  Dad wasn't home at the time.  A few months back, another home invasion killed and raped the wife and 2 girls (while the cops were outside for 1/2 an hour!)

I told my wife that if EVERY home had a gun, and EVERY person in that house was trained on how to use it, this bullshit would end.  The laws aren't stopping these sick crimes.  There are no thoughts of personal endangernment that goes through these peoples minds before committing these crimes.  If the predators know that the home is armed and the folks know how to use the weapon, they would have to think twice.  But knowing that very few homes have weapons and even fewer know how to use them, gives the bad guys have even more balls.

Got my new Benelli yesterday... Played with it for a while, took it apart, put it back together, loaded it, and stuck it under my bed. Just read in the paper about a home invasion about 3  miles from my house (I live out in the country). Better not find his way into my house.

you might have kept the berretta and just kept it disassembled. better then not having one at all. little kids don't have the strength to rooster it even my wife used to have a problem with that.

my daughter was 7 before she found out there were firearms in the house, with the strict admonishment never to touch them unless I was there to show her.  now she owns 2.

Grandpa sure talked alot. I bet I have heard the same version of that 30 times. Did he copyright that?

I did not get any words of wisdom like that from my Grandad. They had passed, before I could understand what they were saying.

I would have preferred the advice that Grandpa gave in the movie Little Miss Sunshine. That would have been the grandpa I would have like to have had.

Sometimes I think you guys are just making this stuff up.

I have no guns. I dont believe in guns. Theres nothing funny about guns.
I dont have any guns; in the house because I really dont trust my wife's stupid 17 year old.
The biggest part of gun safety is knowing where it is. The heaviest part of a gun is the responsibility.
They say a 9mm isnt a man stopper.
I say it'll stop him from doing what ever he's doing and give him something else to do.

9mm ain't my favorite round, but my Sig P226 shooting +P+ Hydroshocks will put a big hole in a man at out to about 50 yards.  A head on a silhouette ain't safe at 50 YARDS either.

I am carrying a Taurus PT111 in 9 MM with those same +P+ Hydroshocks.  A bad guy would have to be  A LOT closer with that piece for me to hit 'em.

I have taken to carrying my PT11 in my work brief case / satchel.  Everywhere I go.
