Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: February 21, 2011, 10:25:32 AM »

We had  10 bikes show-up for our scouting ride through the backroads of the West Virginia mountains this pass weekend. Marlinton is out and Franklin is in . Folks wanting to join us need to make reservations asap the motel is small and rooms are limited. Everyone that makes this ride is in for a treat the planned route has it all beautiful mountain views , awesome twisties and sweepers . West Virginia has done a great job maintaining the roads this is a riders ride unlike the last two rides Highbinder and I have put on ( The Blue Gray Ride @ Gettysburg ,Pa.  June 2009 / The Whiskey Run @ Bardstown, Ky.  June 2010 ) . Below is a few pictures from our scouting ride and motel information . Again to be clear the rooms are limited if you study long about this ride you will study wrong and all the rooms will be rented.

You need a room for friday June 10 and saturday June 11...We will be getting the winter rates as part of the deal for filling the motel ....Single $38.08 total tax included......Double $49.28 total tax included.Be sure to say " The Hillbilly Highway Run " .

Thompson's Motel ...Jct US 33 and 220....Franklin , WV.....304-358-2331

Booked!!!  cooldude

Same... no credit card required to reserve. Asked me if I wanted smoking or non-smoking room  ??? ... didn't think that was an option anymore.

I am picturing the girl who answered the phone (a big rotary-dial-type job) opening a BIG ledger-book and writing my name down in it with a fountain pen... really refreshing in this "hotel.com" age.

Looking forward to it...

It's country folks Phil  cooldude  American owned and operated ...He took our word we  could fill this small motel and we took his we would have a room. You're going to dig this ride I have no doubt whatsoever. Highbinder took us on some outstanding backroads with names like Smoke Hole Canyon and Dry Run Gap just to name a couple. This is a older motel that was very clean with nice showers , cable and wireless internet.

You pictured it perfect  cooldude  Thats the way they do it the motel is owned by a elderly couple it will remind folks of the way Miss Reba runs her motel in Robbinsville.

Highbinder will be able to help you out with this much better than I...With the number of bikes we'll have on this ride and riders of many different skill levels .....I'm thinking keeping it under WFO will not be a problem  Wink  You did great on the Natchez Trace Ride I don't think you will have a problem however Don knows the roads and can hook you up for the GPS. I just followed him for two days he lived in this area several years ago and he knows some great roads for motorcycling.

Edit: anyone coming from 'up-East' let me know, I know the nicest routes out that way from NoVA/DC/MD area.

Depending if a lot of you hook up with us in Knoxville we can ride in different groups to make sure everyone makes it OK.  I wouldn't mind riding with any group that might need help or want a slower pace.  Being from W.Va. I know I can get there without any problem.  I used to travel those roads going camping and fishing in my younger days.  Looks like we will have a big group and a good one for a great weekend!

I'm gonna go up the BRP for a way, then over "the Iron Mountain" in Virginia to Wytheville, and then pick up 219 at 460... there's back roads
from Wytheville to 219, but 77 through the tunnels is cool on a motorcycle...

Did you get a room with double beds?......If so, do you need a roommate?.....I sent a postal order off last Tuesday to get a rebuilt alternator from Ken Heming....not sure when it's going to come in, but surely before June!!.... cooldude.....

I told him I was going to keep mine(it still charges fine) and maybe have a shop around here rebuild it.....surely after 83,000+ miles the brushes could stand replacing and the bearing in it which I think may be what is squeaking.....

I got the last smoking double.  The lady said she may have some on hold that may become available.  Looks like the closest other motels are 27.5 miles away in Petersburg or Harrisonburg.  I got some some other folks would like to attend.  I was down that way last summer, Great Riding in that area!
