Having my right knee replaced in the AM Tuesday morning, so I might have to stay off the Valk for a few days.  Took my last ride - before surgery - this evening with some Sea Foam in the tank to make sure there's some solvent in the system while I'm laid up.

Here's the "pre-surgery" pic....

A little background:  I injured my knee 36 years ago as a junior playing varsity football at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas.  I can remember the day it happened like it was yesterday.  I had just taken the offensive tackle starting position from a senior and was feeling pretty good about that.  We were going through one on one blocking drills and I was about to dominate the guy across from me.  When I came off the ball my right knee just exploded...felt like a knife was just rammed through it.  Of course, back then you just "walked it off", but the knee just wouldn't work.  It also swelled up about the size of a football.  Had my first surgery the following spring and did OK my senior year.  Walked on at Texas A&M and thought I was getting the attention of the coaches, but then had a neck injury that ended my football career for good.  Two more knee surgeries since and here I am.

Looking forward to getting my strength and movement back in my right leg and I plan to ride to Hotglue and Flamingo Babe's Gathering April 1st...see y'all there! Smiley

It has been worked on three times but the last time they must have gotten it right been about 20 yrs since and so far working as good as the right one. Hope to see at the fools house.

Wow, Charlie.  I never even noticed you favoring your right knee.  I hope everything goes great and you get the relief you're looking for.

Charlie....best wishes for a speedy recovery...but DON'T rush it! Someone in my house had to go for repeat surgery after HE didn't follow orders! I'm not mentioning any names.... but I'm sure you can figure it out! Take care. Please ask Dena to call me.

Good luck and speedy recovery on that new knee.  My sister-in-law had the operation and it made a BIG difference in her mobility.  Not so much in her attitude, but that's another story. tickedoff

Good luck with your surgery.  I had my right knee replaced last September and the left in Nov.  I would like to pass on some things I learned from my surgeries.

Ice not heat.  In the winter heat was my choice (I chill easily), but ice is what actually made it feel better.  You can make your own ice packs with zip lock bags, and 2 parts water and one part rubbing alcohol.

Keep it elevated as much as possible for a while.

Complete physical therapy.  Use whatever assistive device they recommend (walker, cane, etc.).  Don't worry about how you think others perceive you.  There are reasons for these recommendations.

I have an extra firm mattress, and I found that a foam topper made a big difference (I do not sleep well, and toss and turn a lot).  Your knee is thicker than your ankle.  If your knee does not settle in to level out your knee and ankle, it causes more pressure on one side of the knee. Or if you sleep on one side all night put a pillow under your knee down to your ankle to your knee to align them with your hip.

The ortopedic surgeon I used to work for told his patients that as long as the scar was not flesh colored, there was still healing going on underneath it.  Both my scars are still discolored almost six months later.

I can do almost anything I want now -- Walk, climb stairs, and I am riding my 1100 Shadow.  At the end of the day, I still have discomfort but it is manageable with Advil or Tylenol.  The main thing I have trouble with is getting up off the floor, which makes it difficult to do some household chores.

Again, good luck, and speedy recovery.

Hey all, thanks so much for the well wishes, advice and insights. cooldude

Sitting in my room right now sipping on coffee and I feel fine.  The Doc came by right after I woke up, said everything went perfect and that I got a "good one"...not sure what that means!

Will start physical therapy tomorrow and that's when the fun begins! Shocked

Here's a pic of my new ride...

Will be taking it home with me tomorrow.  Everything is moving along as expected - pain has subsided some and most of the tubes that were stuck in me are gone.  Took a spin around the hallway this afternoon with the help of a walker.  Plan to be running soon! Smiley

Hey Charlie.  Never noticed you had a problem the few times we've been together.  Glad to hear the surgery went well and you're already up and about somewhat.  I've known a couple folks who have had knee and hip replacements.  The ones that followed the doc's rehab orders faired very well, and those that didn't, didn't.  So, painful as it may be, work hard my friend.  Hope to see you soon.

Dena sprung me from the hospital yesterday along with the OptiFlex3.  Feeling pretty good and have cut the pain meds in half.  Will be flexing my leg at least 6hrs a day on the OptiFlex3 for the next week or until I hit 90 degrees.  After that, it will take some real work to hit 120 degrees flexion which is optimal.

Really happy to be home! Smiley

Once again, thanks to all of you VRCC folks for the well wishes, insight, inspiration and all around concern.  I will be back on the Fat Lady sooner than later! cooldude

How is your recovery progressing?  Or, more directly, have you swung a leg over a Valkyrie lately?   Lips Sealed

We are progressing...slowly. Sad  I have not swung my leg over the Valkyrie yet, but plan to take a spin on the Shadow in the next couple of days.  Figure rolling out with 200lb less is a good thing! Smiley

Thanks for asking and I do hope to take the Valk to GotFs...can't wait to see everybody!
