I pulled the air box to clean the carbs and desmog the bike.  This bike is new to me and I don't know much about maintainance done before I got it.
When I turned the air box over, the was a brown varnish like substance around each of the air tubes going to the carbs.  This substance was stuck to the air tubes and not adhered to the air box at all.  Was this a seal of some type between the box and tubes or did someone add this later?  If this is necessary, I was thinking of using high temp silicone around the tubes if it is.
Any ideas or help is appreciated.

I had the same thing in mine.  It doesn't LOOK factory, but it's the only breather box I've seen open, so I could be wrong... especially since yours has the same thing.

I've tried to think of something I could use next time I'm in there to seal it up well, but have not thought of anything that'll stick well and still be flexible.

Sorry I don't know the answer... but at least you know you're not the only one.

It is the original sealant around the tubes and mine is the same and not sticking to the air box.
Cannot see any problems using Silicone on it. You will see locating tabs to position the tubes

I had the same thing around the tubes. I scraped it off and resealed with a small amount of RTV sealant applied with a finger.  Seems to me I recall cleaning the area to be sealed with some carb cleaner on a piece of rag before sealing.

you don't have to worry ab :cooldude:out resealing the tubes with anything...just put it back together, and make sur that the tabs on the tubes are aligned right,  by the time you put rtv/or sealant on them, and then install, you end up twisting/pulling the tubes, and all you have left is a big mess.

I guess some might be rougher on their airbox during installation. I let the RTV cure first, reinstalled, no mess.
Of course, YMMV
