I have talked my self into synthetic oil. My local shop was out of the "4T", but the salesman (who doesn't ride a Valk) said I would be pleased with the 20W-50 particalily since I'm going to pull a trailer to R.O.T. Rally in Ausitn and Sturgis. This oil is designed for air cooled v-twins. Should I take this stuff back and get a familiar grade? Suggestions appreciated.

20w50 is a bit heavy but for summer use it's fine. Of course opinions vary, as I'm pretty sure you will be abundantly aware of, soon. Now if we could get a darkside thread going...

I use the 20/50 from Mobil1 V-twin synthetic oil. I've use it for 3 oil changes already and I get a really smooth ride out of my 1998 tourer, even during the 107 degree days.

tech manual requires either 10w40 or 20w50 for 100F ambient temps. 20w50 actually can cause higher oil temps and provide less oil film protection, if engine clearances are tight. most say a valkyrie/goldwing engine is just broken in at 250k miles. so what to do? this is why most will use a good 15w40 or 5w40 heavy duty diesel oil and sleep good at night. a diesel engine is more destructive on oil than any motorcycle engine could ever be. oil analysis is the only way to truely know for your application. check out bobistheoilguy.com for OAs of mc oil. presently I have been using Amsoil 10w30/30HD diesel oil. Used OA has indicated continue use even after 1 yr. coming up on 2 yr test soon.

10W-40 or 15W-50 are both be fine in the Valkyrie. Personally, I like Mobil 1 and Wal Mart sells it for a decent price when purchased in 5 quart jugs.

Hey CB1, I hope you're right. I'm already 1200 miles overdue change, thanks to a trip to Florida this week to see the shuttle launch. It will be hot enough here in Louisiana for the next 8 months to use this heavy a viscosity. I'm making an assumption this Mobil 1 has all the necessary additives for the wet clutch and transmission. Correct me if I'm wrong about the oil because I'm going to change oil tomorrow morning before embarking on a 350 mile hike up the Natchez Trace.

The bottle says is it designed for the wet clutch bike. What a difference it made on my bike. smooth and quiet. a HD rider at work turned me on to this oil and I'm glad I tried it.

Thanks for the link CA, I haven't read it in full yet, I want to get a cup of coffee and a comfortable chair. Damn I love a good oil thread. I see the article has two of my favorite features, it promises to be verbose and redundant. What more can you ask?
