So this morning I go out to the garage, I smell gas fumes. Did not think about it again until this evening when my wife came home and said she smelled gas fumes in the garage...so I go out and check the bike. It is then I realized that I rode the bike to work today with the petcock in the off position...so the question I have is...rebuild or replace?
Pro and cons please.

Replace is less work.
Rebuild is less money.
Just replaced mine with OEM. Didn't feel like rebuilding mine. I wrench when required, but I generally get no enjoyment from it.

Have a 99 Interstate. Ordered the rebuild kit and it took me no more than an hour to perform the repair. The hardest part was reconnecting the hoses to the petcock. Smallish area to work in but I got it done. The original lasted 48,000 miles and if I get half that for the tidy sum of $19.69 ( the cost of the kit) then all is well. While I had the tank off i wired my ipod from the aux connection to the handlebar. You can do it.

Its really not rebuilding because the parts are already made. 4 screws and a minute of swaping pieces.

If/when mine dies, I'm going Pingel - non-vac.

Thats probably best because the cheap made petcock is not idiot proof when it's off. I found out that if its off by a fraction it's still on. From now I'll be waiting till the bike starves of fuel when it's off just to make sure it's really off. I need to order a pingel. Is there somewhere in Atlanta I can get one of those things in stock.

It is then I realized that I rode the bike to work today with the petcock in the off position...
One difference is that you need to never forget - never leave the valve on the wrong setting again. If you ever forget to turn it off when you park, it will be the same as if you had a faulty OEM valve, and the only thing keeping gas from your top end will be your carburetor floats...
I think the OEM valve is probably good if reserve works, but I've been slack about letting it go to reserve regularly lately... you never know for sure if the OEM one is still good unless you are "testing" it...
Besides having to worry that the OEM one is letting gas flow when you're parked, sometimes the symptoms of a bad OEM valve is that you are stuck on the side of the road... hard to imagine that happening with a gravity valve...
-Mike "oh (*&(*!! - gravity's broken!"

The petcock rebuild kit from Honda does not address the issue you experienced. The kit is a repair for the diaphragm side of the petcock. Your problem is with the other side of the petcock. ***

Talked to the lovely Mrs this evening when I got home and I was talking to her about the petcock not working and said no silly, I turned it to off for you...so here I am thinking my petcock is not working or my mind is going and instead my wife is tinkering with my valk... I still smell fumes so I will be rebuilding the petcock. Thanks for your feedback.

Take the bike out for a ride and leave the valve in the off position. In a mile or two it'll let you know if working or not. If it quits turn it to res. and see if it stays running, res is working. Turn it back to on and keep riding it.

I've noticed if you just turn the petcock off sometimes it will still leak. If you turn it off and wiggle it up and down a little it shuts off nearly every time. I would think that if you put the bike in 3rd or 4th gear and push it forward until you hear the engine turn over it would be safe to hit the starter button. If you can't rotate the engine then remove the plugs and push the bike forward and that should rid any fuel that made its way down yonder. This is what I have been doing just to play it safe as these bikes continue to get older. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because I don't want to get stuck out by my lil ol lonesome somewhere.

Last year, I discovered that my petcock failed and I checked with the local stealer as they listed the Pingel in their online catalog, but, alas, they didn't stock the Pingel. They had the rebuilt kit for the OEM petcock and wanted something like $30 for it. I decided not to get the kit and ordered the Pingel for a better price elsewhere. I didn't really have any faith in the OEM pot metal petcock.
