Went to start the Valk the other day and I heard the dreaded click like the starter silyniod on a car.
Several times of doing this and nothing.
Tried some moor and the starter engaged and fired up.
It did this several more times throughout the night.

Tried it today and the same thing.

So I went to http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/VSGPages/starterbutton.htm
and have it apart currently and hope to get it back together and all works well.

Is this the problem or am I barking up the wrong tree?

When I had to clean my starter button, I don't believe there was a clicking noise.  Check your connections at the battery.

I took my starter button apart also and cleaned it.  When I would press the button, sometimes I would get nothing also.  It wasnt that it needed to be cleaned.  My button is more of a problem with the little contacts.  When I push my starter button all the way in, sometimes I wont get anything.  But if I push the button in to where I hear start to fire up and hold it there, it seems to start fine everytime.  I think the contacts dont sit up high enough when the button is pushed all the way in.  I bent the small contacts up some so they would contact better and it worked fine the first few times until I assume the contacts, because they are so flexible are back to normal.  So for me, just pushing the starter button in but not all the way works for me.  Hope this makes sense.

I crossed the positive and the starter connections at the starter relay and it fired right up.
I think this may be the problem.

I say its the battery. Not enough juice to crank her over. How old is the battery?

Battery is 3 years old.

I could have it tested.

I have talked to a couple people and they both think it may be the seloniod.

??? Chances are that it is NOT your Starter (doesn't hurt to clean it up tho), Battery or solenoid.  It sounds like you are not getting a solid connection on either your positive or ground, I would take them off at both ends, clean them up with some sandpaper, then re-attach.

The ground wire I have found has a tendency to rust at the frame side of the cable.

Pull it off, sandpaper it up and remount it.   My problem was solved.........

I think steeler has it right, I did the same thing.  It could be the others, though.  The battery should not be bad enough that it just clicks, if it spun and started when you jumpered the solenoid, the battery is good , that should also rule out the ground, but I would clean it anyway, normal periodic maintenance. I re-wired the starter circuit to remove headlight current.  Now, the only current going through the starter switch is the tiny tiny current to power a relay.  This should save  the starter contacts and gives it longer life. I read about this in the shop talk on this board - great stuff here!
