« on: March 07, 2011, 05:37:09 AM »

Buddy started riding last year, he rides with a full face,
full leathers on hot days, he must die of heat and sweat.
But he keeps his helmet dry by wearing a hood/sock/balaclava,
 dunno what you call it.

I wear a half helmet and the inside gets soaked from sweat.
I  ain't wearin no sock, so, is there anything I can do
to help reduce the punky/funky helmet?

try this site.  they, also, have a cedar filled item you can put in your helmet when not wearing to soak up the smell.

My buddy must wear everything, his riding skills on his little
600cc sporty are not enough, he falls over too easily.

"Don't wear it!!!! "

I must wear a helmet in canada, or the OPP(here)
will slap the charm bracelets on me.

Years ago when I was an exploring mountain bike rider in the UK I woudl nag my friends to wear bike helmets.

One eventually told me that he decided to follow my advice and it saved him from harm.

He fell off his bike in his driveway and hit his head on gravel. He ended up with large indentations in his helmet. They would have been in his skull if not for his bicycle helmet.

Any rider who thinks he's never falling off is waiting for a world of hurt. IT WILL HAPPEN.

I won't throw in my experiences with why I think full helmets are better because that is a personal choice.

I will say that being fully covered may actually be cooler than you expect. When I wear long sleeves and jackets in the summer my riding buddies look at me funny. However, with my skin out of the sun I run cooler than if I had my arms and chest out baking away. My helmet, a full face helmet, may be keeping the sun off of my face and neck and not heating me up as bad as if I were running without it.

I also wear a non-black helmet.

I used to wear black, but picked a black helmet off of a summer seat and dropped it because it was hot. Figured that kind of heat didn't need to bake my head. My burgundy helmet is cooler than the black, although I have no science to prove that it just feels right (pun intended).

Food for thought.

Wash the helmet.  Seriously, get a big bucket and use shampoo on the liner. Dunk the whole helmet and rinse.

If its real funky use a cap of pine-sol and lightly scrub the inner liner.  Don't scrub the white foam just the cloth liner. The crud that came out of an old full face was pretty revolting when I did it the first time.

This is from the shoei rep and several motorcycle sites.

I concur but use baby shampoo then if you don't rinse it all out and the shampoo runs out of the liner because of your sweat, you won't be blinded.

Ah, well, then just come ride in Texas for a few weeks this summer. Then, when you go back to Canada it will always seem cool! Cheesy

Seriously, in the real heat, full gear is cooler than no gear.

Washable liners and the occasional chucking of the helmet into an ice-freezer at a gas stop is the only way I've dealt with the "funk".

I wear black, everything. Long sleeve shirt to keep
me from gettin cooked. Helmet is black, but is matte.
I put the half helmet in the saddlebag when away from
the bike. Doesn't get heated up.

I can no longer wear a full face, seems to make breathing
a little tougher on a hot day, and the sweat problem is double.

As for washing, it gets washed approx. 3 times per season,
with a little smell-nice soap. Dunno what my problem is with
the sweat, but think I'll go with that half-sock Jimi Cap,
that oughtta getter done.

I wonder if you can get a do-rag that soaks it up?

Ride in Texas? I'm told it's like having a hair dryer
right in yer face. I'll just wait to see you take your bike apart
this summer, if you can break apart the bug glue
I saw on there last IZ.

Riding in the American South East summer can be like having a blow dryer in your crotch at the stop light.

Wash the helmet? I have honestly never tried that. I probably should.

Well, she's gotten cleaned a bit since then...off the road twice (once hard) and a rear-ending by a careless cage have made me bolt quite a few new parts on her last year!

Easiest way to clean chrome I've EVER found (unbolt old bent part, throw away, bolt on new part).

Works with fenders too! Cheesy

Whenever you take your helmet off at meals, gas stops, and such, do like Daniel and put it in the ice thing or just turn it upside down whereever it will stay with the liner pointing as directly into the sun as it can.
"Helmet Fresh" is a good product also.

For heat I wear an armored mesh jacket and dump water from my bottle on my T shirt under it after it gets too warm to drink, keeps me cool all day as long as I'm in the wind.  Hoser

Actually, no it isn't.  Read it in a motorcycle magazine article about cleaning helmets and it made sense.  My Nolan's liner is removable so i put it in the washing machine on the delicate cycle at least once a month.  More during the steam sauna MS summers.  I also wear a do rag to keep the liner cleaner longer.

I use to have that problem for a long time.  When I could afford it I bought a Shoei RF1100( Of course, with the dragon on the sides  Grin ) with the removeable lining.  I have heard of the washing of the whole helmet before but never tried it.  I tried different sprays, Fabreze, Lysol, ect and they just don't do the trick.

Under Armour also makes one without the tie. Lightweight but holds alot of sweat and breathes. Sorry no link but most sporting goods stores carry them. I use them under my lid and the wife uses them under her hockey helmet (talk about SWEAT) and they keep the sweat out of her eyes. Well made, her's has lasted thru at least 3 hockey seasons. Called Skull cap.   cooldude
