Last time I got my GEO Tracker inspected they refused to pass it because it had air horns instead of the stock "beep beep". I had to disconnect the air horns and reconnect the original horn to get it passed. Has anyone had a problem with getting their Valk inspected with air horns? I'm thinking I will take the Valk somewhere else to get it inspected. Inspector said that the the air horns were classified as "novelty horns" and would not pass state statutes. Doesn't seem to matter that the louder horn might save your hide.  tickedoff

When I had my airhorns (Finally got sick of replacing compressors and switched to a different kind) I never had an issue with getting it to pass inspection...

I'd usually warn 'em that they prolly wanted me to demonstrate the horns working outside their shop instead of inside though because they were so loud...

What kind did you switch to?  My compressor is getting weak and needs replacement.

Hey there Houdini....I got rid of my beep beeper and since I had already gone to a pingel petcock, I had a vacancy (blank spot) on the left side where the fuel valve used to be , so I put a Stebil dual air horn.  That small thing is two horns and the compressor (no external tubing)  It was around $40 and easy to mount in to work from the stock horn button using a relay (supplied)  I really like it

I was replacing the compressor every 2 years or so, got tired of it... Got these:

http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=7703&str=1

Mounted one on each side attached to the engine mounts... Just checked, ordered these in November of '07 and still have 'em, so a little more longevity than the air horns had...

Haven't had any problems in ~5 inspections.  They just want to hear that it beeps.
I would argue that point with them, or just plain leave and go somewhere else.  Too much interpretation of the vehicle code is being done by the inspector himself.  "Novelty horn" implies some sort of Dukes of Hazzard type thing.

Not trying to hijack the thread but has anyone ever used the Bad Boy air horn? I saw this for the first time at harbor freight over the weekend.

These will be my replacements as well. Haven't had any problems with the air horns yet - except a stuck relay one night - had to pull off the side of the freeway and yank the wires loose as I was starting to think there was a tornado siren going off!

No problem with air horns...there is no "novelty horn" rule.

They CAN reject if the horn is "unusually loud or harsh", but on the other hand it has to be heard clearly for 200 feet.

Usually not worth arguing with an inspector that is out of bounds though...big fish, small pond thing and he'll just keep finding reasons even if you win an argument...go to another place and use them.

Something useful for you Texas folks...

THIS is the criteria your stuff must have to pass inspection:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/inspection/item_insp.asp

The inspectors have no latitude.

The inspectors have no latitude.

"have no", and "take no" are two different things.
However, definitely concur on the going elsewhere, except you've already paid him, and you don't have to pay again if you come back within however many days, so going elsewhere costs you another fee.  I did that once with my truck.  Had to change a piddly thing, made him happy, got the sticker, told him he was an idiot, and never went back.

Additionally, it wasn't a fail, but I have only been asked once to actuate each brake separately on the Valkyrie to verify brake light activation via both foot and hand.  I looked at the criteria on that website, and there's no mention of that.  I think he would have failed me if he didn't see the brake light activate both times (when he told me to use the foot brake, and when he told me to use the hand brake).
The code is not written such that it clarifies.  If they were going for "no latitude", they would either say "IS" or "IS NOT" required to activate with hand and foot separately.  If course, if it says "IS", then Bandit wouldn't be able to register his here.
I'm sure there are plenty of cases like that.  I wonder if they would fail me if I had one brake lamp out.  The I/S comes with two, and I'm only required to have one, but I bet there are inspectors out there who would fail me for having one out anyway.

The Wolo Bad Boy is very similar (licensed? private-labeled? chinese rip-off?) to the Stebel Compact Nautilus.  Search the Tech Board and you'll find lots of info.  I'm on my second one - the first one got weak and then quit.  I suspect a lethal cocktail of Lime Creek Road Silt ( 2funny  ) + several days / thousands of miles of rain up to InZane X and back.

This is only a rumor I've heard  coolsmiley but some shops make the vehicle inspectors find something wrong with a car that is only getting an inspection.  If you have something else done, like an oil change, they will ease up on you.

I failed an inspection in Texas on a 1970 Ford mustang.  Inspector said that the  high beam indicator wasn't bright enough.  I told him that the little red pony can be clearly seen at night.  I just went down the street and had another inspection done and never went back to the first shop.

All factory bulbs have to be working, 2 bulbs factory, then 2 bulbs working. I had a truck that had side markers that also blinked, one side didn't work, had to fix, but he also showed me the text that proved it.  He wasn't being hard case. They had state in thier shop that week. The week before, they had a visit from a decoy car from the state , but had caught the problems.

I haven't been around Interstate pods enough to even hazard a guess, but I went out and measured one of 'em if that helps, it's 3 1/2 inches at it's wides point, 3 inches at it's narrowest, and 1 1/2 inches deep...

(Rough measurements, I didn't bring my calipers Wink )

Next time we're in the same place with a few tools, hit me up, I should be able to take one off really easily (Just one bolt needs to come out, and then pull the plugs on two wires, but they're the slip on kind) and you're welcome to see if you could make it work...

The Wolo/Stebels will, and I'd be surprised if those are bigger then the Stebels.

I installed one inside the right side POD last year.  It easily fits (including the interposing relay and associated wiring).

Only took a couple of hours.

If ya need photos, let me know.

I still tell stories about that horn on your Valk Mr. Glue... Been really tempted to imitate it from time to time, that was pure genius!
