 Embarrassed

I work with a couple of women who go riding A LOT with their husbands on their Harley street glides or Road glides.  They are good people and I enjoy talking about riding with them. HOWEVER, I also enjoy giving them a good ribbing (friendly of course) about the reliability of their bikes. Wink

This morning I asked on of them if they knew why most harley riders like to have a honda rider in their group.  She said no, and so I told her that someone had to be able to go for help. Grin

Fast forward to this afternoon.  Now I have "adapted" a Harley batwing to my Valkyrie, and it looks great, but I need a few small dollar parts from the Harley shop (one of the largest in the nation) so I go there on my bike this afternoon and park it right up front for everyone to see.  I LOVE seeing the Harley guys look over a valk with a Harley fairing on it  Cool

I go in and buy my $6 part.  I come out and get on my bike and go to start it.........NOTHING.....NADA.....ZILCHO......it won't start.  The headlight isn't on and the starter won't engage.  Now I recognize this as a bad start button on the handlebar.  CRAPPPPPPPP!!!

Of all the places to break down....the HARLEY shop!  OUT FRONT at the Harley shop!  and I have to call someone at work to come and get me...... Cry

needless to say that I was eating the humble pie...hehe.  When the one gal I was "harassing" this morning found out, she drove out there and took a pic of my bike in front of the Harley shop broken down so she can rub it in.....hehe.....it's all in good fun.   Karma...gota love it.

I had to get my dad's help with a trailer and transport the fat lady home on the "stretcher".
The guys at the Harley shop were great!  They helped me as much as they could and were very nice to me.  I was impressed with the service I received as a non-Harley owner.  Kudos to Black-Diamond Harley in Marion, Illinois. cooldude

Ohhhh yeahhhhhh. I can take it.  I just didn't expect it.  This WILL NOT happen again.  I will add a relay to take the current draw off of the switch from the headlight.

Well now that I have taken just a few minutes to study the start circuit of my bike and find the relay and such, I am even MORE embarassed.  All I had to do was pop the right cover off and use a screwdriver to "jump" the relay right there.....easy as pie. tickedoff

grrrrr lesson learned THE HARD WAY.

I own and ride a valk-but something about people in glass houses comes to mind. I do business down here with an indepedent dealer whose business is at least 95% h/d. Back in feb i showed him and his 2 mechs the nickel trick-they still didn't beleive it the second and third time even with their own nickels. If you haven't done that for them yet ya might consider it. Ya gotta get some respect back-right. Just sayin. uglystupid2 RIDE SAFE

Ya should'a bought a Woody.  Then you wouldn't have needed to be at a Harley dealer in the first place.   Wink

Man, that is a strange sight, ................I remember the day I bought mine,  brought it home in the back of my pickup, some 300 miles, we stopped at a drive through for a quick bite and a streetwise biker type woman walked by the truck and took a long lingering look at the bike and it's tank badge, then remarked, now there's something you don't see everyday.............I thought at first she was refering to the big ole flat 6 Valk engine...............and what might that be, I  inquired. She replied "why, a Honda in the back of a truck of course"   I knew at that very moment that I had bought the right bike.  That was 10 years ago and it has never been in the back of a truck or on a trailer since. Still get a kick outta that comment.   cooldude

Just tell 'em "See... All it took was a fairing and a few other small Harley parts, and now my Honda's ACTING like a Harley too!"

It's all the fairing's fault I tell ya'!

(And yeah, right after I got my Valk I was tinkering with neon lights under the tank. Missed getting the vacuum line hooked back up, had enough fuel already in to get me a mile down the road. The whole time I was on the side of the road taking the tank off and reconnecting things I kept chanting in my head "Dear whoever, PLEASE don't let a Harley rider stop to help!!! ANYTHING but that!"

Serk, That is a good comeback...I like it. cooldude

I think in my case given the YEARS that I have been a smart a$$ towards everyone (in fun of course)  I thing I will just grin and bear it.

BTW...  Here are a couple of pictures of the Harley Fairing, they are taken with my phone so they aren't the greatest but you get the idea.
My speakers arent in yet so right now I have holes where they should be.

I was in the HD Store picking up the "blanks" that fit in the empty gauge holes in the fairing.

Nice.................. that looks to be an HD headlight as well, is that so ?

Here's mine ..............an 80's style shell only, wish I had done the later model fairing as you have done.

VERY nice!

Good eye  coolsmiley That is indeed a HD headlight.  I HAD to use it due to the way the newer fairings are made.
here is a link to a small write-up I did on it.

Great write up, I'll have to bookmark that in case a I ever decide to go that route. Oh and I'd leave that HD headlight emblem right there, My fairing still has the small original black and orange HD decal on the inside chrome mount and whenever asked about it, I simply reply that I see no problem with using the best parts of another cycle.  cooldude

That is embarassing, I never had any reliability issue with either of my Harleys...ever. I've owned many bikes over the years and the only one that's had to be trailered home was my Valkerie.     (more than once) It's still one of my favorites, I've wrenched on it more than all my bikes combined. That's ok, I also know it will outlast any of them Wink Sharp looking Valk cooldude
