Anybody seen that commercial set in 2036 with the Chinese professor talking to his class about the fall of great nations? The Newsweek article dovetails nicely with that thought.

"Needless to say, it’s impossible to balance the budget by listening to these people. But politicians pander to them anyway, and even encourage their misapprehensions. As a result, we’re now arguing over short-term spending cuts that would cost up to 700,000 government jobs, imperiling the shaky recovery and impairing our ability to compete globally, while doing nothing to tackle the long-term fiscal challenges that threaten … our ability to compete globally."
Makes a lot of sense to me, they can cut all the benefits and $ from state, fed, county, workers etc. but that is a drop in the bucket. Look at the dollars spent on the big programs, politicians only care about re-election and therefore do nothing for the long term good of our nation. Many great civilizations have crumbled from within. I guess in the long run it is the citizen who votes for these people that is to blame...a professor once told me that being a citizen of the US comes with a lot of responsibility. It is our duty to take voting seriously and examine who and what we support, today politicians are elected based on 30 sec ads and media support.

If I am wrong, we will have some other DumbAss in office but hopefully that will buy us time to fight the ignorance.Even then, I see that as only prolonging the inevitable fall of what WAS a great nation.

"So, now, magically everyone will be smarter?" Not necessarily smarter Bobbo.... Just finally awakened! Sometimes a crisis has to slap us in the face before we get serious about dealing with it. I hope & pray it's not too late to avoid the full consequences of our short sightedness. I'm thinking not.

Bush was much worse than Clinton along with Reagan and G. Bush were much worst than Carter. Or, I guess some sort of magic occurs when Republicans get elected.

One thing we can agree on for sure Bobbo is the POOR performance & complete disregard for common sense of BOTH the dominant political parties. I think that the time for the keeping score, tit for tat, gotcha style politics has long gone by the wayside if we are going to avert the nearer-than-most-of-us-think disaster. I don't think we have enough serious straight thinkers in place yet to pull it out. The Repubs for as long as I can remember {I've been politically aware since the late '60s} talk a good game but disappoint terribly on fiscal matters. I'm happier with the direction of their foreign policy thinking although they can be quite clumsy in it's execution. Don't confuse all the true conseratives support for Repubs with complete satisfaction with them. It's more a case of the lesser of two evils to us considering the outright lunacy of the Dems liberal offerings that run against them. Even Pres. Reagan as good as he was, still disappointed a lot of us conservatives with his fiscal policies. Yes, he & all the Repubs before & after him were just as guilty as the Dems for the current crisis. God help us!

I don't think the vast majority of people are ignorant, but they were VERY ignorant of Obama by design. the man was voted in on a slogan that sounded good and has done little good mostly harm. maybe we'll listen closer to a politician trying to get elected next time if he says he wants to "fundamentally change America"

Unfortunately, our elections have been the lesser of two evils for quite some time.

Bobbo says.......... "I'm sure there were some that liked the slogan, and wanted to change things to benefit themselves, but I think the other major factor was the offerings from the Republicans in that election. Unfortunately, our elections have been the lesser of two evils for quite some time." A-frickin-men!! The offerings by the Repubs have been tepid at best. After the brutal beatings GB took at the hands of the idiot modern day press, we {the country as a whole} would have elected Satan himself if he ran as a Dem. Along comes a good looking, slick talking Dem & it was over, especially considering the Repub choice in '08. What has happened since then {2010} is a reflection of America waking up & hopefully FINALLY paying attention to what is going on in this country. Not convinced we have the fortitude to finish the job. Again, I pray we do.
