National Anthem at Sporting Events
l
- an editorial

Our Sentiments EXACTLY ..!

“So, with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten — straight up, no styling. Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don’t make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification. Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love — not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from the costumes, the makeup and the entourages.  Sing “The Star Spangled Banner” with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you.”

absolutely right! I'm not sure that we do but we should hold professionals to a higher standard. remember the little girl that was singing the anthem at a hockey game and her mic cut out? she didn't bungle the words but if she had we'd cut her the slack that ms aguilara(sp) will never get.
your a professional act like it!

this also applies to other professions like 'so called' professional drivers, there is a small minority of them that make me insane how they drive.

Not sure what your saying here and I wasn't there, but I think Jimmy Hendrix was at his own, or someones concert and the people were there to see HIM.

Gear Jammer post is right on.  I couldn't stand the jerk that sang the NA at the Bristol race this past Sunday, I think it was Billie Ray Sirris(spelling?).  Who ever he was it sucked!

Yep, We were at a hockey game last week and were playing the guys up north. A young lady came out and sang the Canadian National Anthem beautifully. Then some jerk screeched out (a lame attempt at the Jimi Hendrix version) our Nation Anthem on a keyboard. It sucked and it was embarrassing.

I saw Jimi play that at the Isle of Wight festival 1970.

I was 17 years old.
Still gives me goose bumps.

I think it's very creative unlike the squawks of Roseanne, Christina etc.

Oh yeah-brought back a memory i thought i had supressed. Rosanne barr-sounded like she was beating cats to death in a steel drum with a crowbar-and grabbing her crotch. My own thoughts were to have the-being nice here (person) deported for impersonating an american. 2funny RIDE SAFE.

Thanks Bobbo, that was and still is excellent!

When Woodstock Festival was first announced, I and most of my friends made plans to go.  Of course, as with most poor teenager plans, we never made it.  Even if we tried, the '63 Ford Econoline van a friend had would have only stranded us somewhere along the way!   Embarrassed

Got the album, and that's as close as we came to this event.    coolsmiley

Another friend went to the Altamont festival, but not only to see the event.  He was prospecting for the local Big Red Machine chapter, and they made him go to do the dirty work.  After the crap hit the fan, he decided he was a lover, not a fighter, and left Cali.  He always has a lot of crazy stories from those days.   Shocked

"They all have to 'church it up'" according the kid and his lady friend.  Hendrix's performance wasn't any less gimmicky than whatever pop star decides to 'church it up', either.

Your use of that phrase implies that the Anthem is not worthy of play without being dressed up.  I don't think you meant this, but that's how that phrase is usually used.

I used to work at J. C. Penny.  When asked where I worked, I would sometimes "church it up" by calling it "Jacques Pennoix"  pronounced with a French accent- Jock Pen-wah!

I think the expression, in this case, comes from the way black church choirs perform.  Pop singers can't sing "Happy Birthday" without churching it up.  Maybe it's because they're trying to mask a lack of talent, maybe because their  "rendition" is more important than the song or its sentiment.

The national anthem is not all that easy to sing. There's a couple of high notes not everyone can hit, but we're talking about professional entertainers who claim to be singers.

Not to boast, but I have sung the anthem at several professional and nonprofessional events, sporting and others. American and Canadian anthems. Even at INZANE one year. You would not believe the number of people that appreciate a traditional version of our anthem. While I have the ability to ham it up, or whatever term you want to use, I believe it be disrespectful to do so. While I have been asked to by certain venues, I will not. It goes over well every time. I tend to think that the people that choose to do this are out for one thing, THEMSELVES. About some notes being to high, sing in a lower key, I believe the total range is not more than 11 notes. With a little practice I believe that anyone could do it.

Every time I sing it I get a huge lump in my throat and can hardly finish.  I am that passionate about it.  While singing, I think of all of the soldiers, current and past, that are out there defending our right to sing it.

I agree, sing it like it was written and not too much vibratto (sp?).

P.S.  I am the loudest at all sporting events and it gets people around me singing too.
