I changed out the slows to 38's, adjusted the pilots to 1 3/4 (does that sound right?) from set and pulled the tops off the carbs.  I was told by the PO that the needle jets were adjustable, but they look stock to me and I don't see any way of adjusting them.  Am I supposed to take the vacumm piston apart?  Sad Can't see were it comes apart and I don't want to wreck it. ???

If stock jets no clip to adjust. You have to use one of the screws that holds the top on and screw it into the top of the diaphram. Pull real easy and it will come apart. look here http://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/shims.html

if you have aftermarket needles, then there is an "E" clip and 5 notches at the top of the needle.  Remove the carb top cover (three screws), the molded cover underneath, and the spring. Carefully remove the diaphragm assembly.  Use one of the cover screws to thread a few turns into the middle of the diaphragm assembly and tug straight out on the screw (you'll feel a snap as it releases) to access the needle.  You will either see a "nail" looking needle or an adjustable needle with the notches and a clip.  There should also be one small washer.
