I took a spare to a company in Titusville, FL and when done it was the worst piece of crap ever. I wrote them a note instead of calling, for fear my mouth would override my common sense at the moment. Told them if it had been my company or the inspection were my responsibilty, that piece would never have left the shop. I added that the cover was essentially now a piece of junk. I have the original one now which I want to send to someone that will do it right and make me proud to show it off. Does anyone have any suggestions based on either personal experience or knowledge.

I have no personal knowledge of this company, but "Cowboy" out of DFW area recommended them to me when I mentioned having my Cobra lightbars redone.

How about mentioning the company that did the work and maybe show the end result as well.... sorta like free advertising.

Someone used to have them chromed on an exchange basis... JP Sonier?

Anyway, that piece of metal is shaped in such a way that good chrome is a difficult job.

I think Chet was doing this on an exchange plan - haven't looked to see what he's doing lately.  He's at Rattlebars.com.  He has access to a plater he's really happy with.  Looking now, I see he has a retirement announcement on his web page.  Maybe you could find out who his plater is, and deal with them.  Just a thought.

What's the deal with chroming in the USA?  Has the EPA made it so difficult or expensve that we can't do it right anymore?  Just look at the chrome on the cars from the 50's & 60's and you can figure we used to do it good.  I'm waiting on some parts from a shop in East Hartford, CT.  Keeping my fingers crossed they come out okay.  If they do (or don't) I'll post it.

The problem with chrome plating aluminum in the USA are the gases that are emitted when the copper is put on the piece. It is now illegal to emit these gases, it is an EAP nightmare if cought. If copper is not used first then the chrome will pit as the aluminum pits, and could have a bit of a dull looking finish. That is why the cobra pieces last only a couple of years. The aluminum pits, then the chrome peels because there is no cooper base on the piece. There are places that may do it but it is important that you ask if they use a copper base.

I have a set of slightly pitted Cobra swingarm pivot covers I got from you (you made me aware of their
exact condition before I got them) that I wish I could get rechromed... the one or two places I
talked to said something about aluminum and copper... I wonder if they can still spew out those
gasses in Canada  coolsmiley ...

I bought a new water pump cover and had it sent directly to a company in Nashville Tennessee called Advanced Plating. My expectations were low after all I had read about how diificult these were to chrome. They charged 85 to chrome it and 16 to ship it but I was amazed. It is absolutely PERFECT! Robin Callahan, 2003 Standard (chromed to the max).

When they were chroming a truck front end for one of the car shows on Spike, they used Advanced Plating.  Advanced uses copper base.  They installed state of the art EPA recycling and air decontamination scrubbers when they rebuilt after the BIG flood a few years ago.  What was really cool was the show was building an old truck and gave it a rusted out looking paint job. The chrome radiator grill and bumper were left with only the copper plating and not chromed or a clear sealant. They wanted the copper to oxidize to match the truck paint scheme.

I've got a chrome water pump cover that I got from Rattlebars on exchange about ten years ago-still looks good (when I take the time to clean it). Usually it is filthy, though, and does not look very blingy. It is probably not an item I would have chromed if I were doing things again.
