AVON has got to do something. With all the bad PR they have gotten about tires coming apart they had better do more that just give rebates. They still refuse to compensate me for my rear tire coming apart. They offered to sell me a new one at $6 more than I originally paid for the tire when I bought it. Go figure.
While they handle well, this is the second AVON tire I have had go bad. First one went down while doing 75MPH accross the Arizona desert and on Indian property. It had 9k miles with 30% of the thread left. Second one lasted about 6K and went down while doing 65MPH. The tire showed 55% of the thread left. I'm having problems convincing my lady to get back on the bike for another road trip. Maybe she has more sense than me.
My only problem with Avon has been that the rear wears out around 8K mi.
The fronts have served me well 16k-18k mi average.
The one thing about the Avons is that you must run 46-48 PSI min in the rear. and 40-42 PSI min in the front any less and they have issues on the Valk. I'm not sure that they are really designed for a bike that is as heavy as our Valks.
I have heard about others having problems with them but I haven't had the same experience.
I switched to E3's on the rear to get better mileage, it doesn't hook-up quite as well as the Avon but overall I like it just fine and I can put about 10K on one.
I recently went with an E3 on the front as well because it saved me a few $$$. And if it gets a few more miles than the Avon then that's a bonus.
