The other day I ran into an old high school friend whose mother is from Japan.  I asked her if any of her family had been affected with the earthquake and tsunami.  She said her sister lives about 100 miles north of the epicenter, in a small town on the eastern shore of Japan.  Her sister said that the fishing boats have been washed up onto shore to the down town area and that the only help they’ve gotten is from the American military ships that have been bringing in supplies and food.  She says that they are starving because everything is closed, or washed away.  The Japanese government hasn’t been able to help with getting supplies in at all she says.

I feel for these people terribly.  I wish I could help.  Wish there was someway to do something.

What are my options?

I actually donated thru a Facebook game. There are several options listed on the Times site here:

EDIT: I believe PACOM is coordinating military relief efforts in Japan. Maybe their public affairs office can give you a better idea of how to help or perhaps a little feed back might bring more awareness of the plight of smaller Japanese villages along the coast?
