Author Topic: Cobra Quiet Baffles?  (Read 3441 times)

My "new" Interstate came with the Cobra 6 into 6 pipes, and even with the baffles in they're louder than I like. It looks like maybe Cobra makes "Quiet Core" baffles, but the nomenclature is a little fuzzy and I'm not sure if I'd need the cores for the "Speedster" or the "Dragster" or the "Boulevard" series of pipes?

Anyone have any experience with these? Do they make much of a difference in sound levels? Which model is appropriate? Where's a good source?

I could fall back on the de-piggied stock pipes, but the Cobras look pretty good with the heat shields in place, and I'm not real thrilled about going through the rejetting procedure that the stockers would likely require. I do like the sound level of the modded stockers, though (I have a Tourer set up that way), and maybe I'd get better mileage with stock jetting

When I called them to buy replacement baffles, I told them I had seen several types of baffles out there and they told me they only offered the 1 flavor which ran about $20 ea.  If they have a new "quiet" baffle that would be interesting to know about.

I think most around here would agree the only way to make Cobra's into quiet pipes are to remove them. They are LOUD pipes.

I don't know nothin' about no Cobra pipes, but I have been looking around at all the formerly
available Cobra stuff for Valkyries that I can find and have seen "Boulevard" on a lot of the packaging...

Are you sure the carb jets were changed?  Very few, and I mean very few folks rejetted their carbs when they installed Cobra pipes.  And if they did change anything, it was probably just installed the Cobra needles, which aren't a big deal to change.

If I swap back to the stock pipes I'll post the Cobras for sale here. I was told that the jetting was redone, but who knows?

I love my cobra's, the looks and sound are what I think adds to the character of my valk !!!!!
This is what keeps the Valkyrie a ONE OF A KIND motorcycle with everybody making it there OWN !!!

What I did however to tone down the Cobra's - Purchased 3-more baffles from cobra - Cut them in half and extended the existing 6 baffles 1/2 again as long. Took them to a local welder and he layed them in a piece of angle iron to keep straight and then tackwelded around in 4 spots.

Slid them back into the pipes and installed the holding screw.

The sound is basically the same - What it has done is take the resination out at cruising speed.

You can remove the factory baffles, and wrap them with the exhaust wrap used in offroad pipes or the kind used in cafe bikes, hold it in place with a few stainless wires twisted tight. Then slide then back in place.  The wrap is available from any off road bike shop and is fairly cheap. It will kill some off the bark from the cobras.

Hadn't thought of either of those latter two options---the exhaust wrap would be especially budget-friendly. I'll think about giving that a try....

Open non-baffled Cobras were the deciding factor that made me buy my first Valk. Sounds like a NASCAR engine when it starts and I love it of course after 23 years of working around loud engines in the Army my hearing isn't as sensitive as most. I also think it help keep the wildlife out of my way at 5AM going to work and even Harley guys like the sound.

I like the cobras  sound just as they are!   coolsmiley  I like a little noise. Cheesy

Well, I would like to keep the melting boot heals of of them... but other than that.

I like the sound too, and if I'm lazy I may just wear ear plugs when I ride the Interstate. I do believe that we should keep in mind that motorcyclists are a relatively small minority in this part of the world, though, and the more of us who ride with straight pipes, the sooner the bureaucracy will work to make it harder to make any more noise than an electric motor. If that happens, then the de-piggified stock pipes on my Tourer will be illegal, even though they are not offensively loud.

You ever feel like throttling some of those dipstick teens whose cage is a rolling boombox that threatens to jar your fillings loose? A lot of people feel that way about excessively loud exhaust systems.

Try the Cobra "shorties" without baffels.  Then the fat lady sounds like she looks and performs. Makes a statement as she goes by. Just my opinion.

I just bought a '97 C with Cobr's on it. I would like to make it a little quieter. I can't find any info online about replacement "quiet core" baffles. Has anyone?

I have the baffles in my cobras and like the sound. I find that if i want it loud give it the gas. And if i want it quiet just ease on the gas. I did take the baffles out once and that was too loud for me. If i go thru the hood i just keep it in a higher gear and lay off the gas.
