Who would be up for a wrench party in McKinney?  Understanding I'm the new kid (ha) on the block here, I'd be willing to feed the group with some good vittles for some time spent on my valk.  Simple stuff for you experts yet difficult for someone like me, lacking tools and knowledge.  Need some electrical rewireing and relays added , fluids changed, go to the darkside, new bushings for the shocks installed and possibly bearings in the front and new brake pads.  If I were to offer up my place and cook up some burgers or better, is there any interest here?  OR am I over stepping my newby bounds.  Please let me know if it's the latter.  Hope your Friday has been a Good Friday and celebrate Easter.  Blessings.

I live in Melissa, just north of McKinney. I own the aircraft maintenance company at the Collin County Airport. I have done just about any and everything to a Valk, even 2 engine changes.

There are no boundries when it comes to this club, and stepping up to have a gathering or put together a ride. I think we can get some people together and do some wrenching. I actually need to do a carb sync on my bike too. Depending on the number of people and when we can get together, we can do the work at my shop at the airport, since I have all the tools and stuff.  But I can load up anything we may need and take it to your place too. I look forward to meeting you!!

FlyBoy, that would be a Blessing to do it at your place instead of you and anyone else loading up tools etc. (and whatever the football is).  I will still supply food to whomever shows up.  I am familiar with the airport, have helped with some charity events there in the past.  Is there a date that is best for you and maybe we can work around that?  I'm not sure what I would need parts wise but am sure with a little help I can accomplish it.  Thanks to all and Blessings  Woody

Tom, at this point I don't care what the airport manager says. I pay my rent and I can utilize my shop in any way I want. After all, I am really just a hobby shop, and this is my hobby.

My May weekends are pretty much full. June looks better for me at this point. What date, 4, 11, 18th do we like?

June 4th works good for me -- but hey I,m the guy that needs help.  So I will adjust my schedule around any date you deem fit other than the 25th.  Thanks again and in advance.  Celebrate Easter!

Y'all are going to conflict with Hoghead's East Texas wrench party and they aren't that far apart.

Suggest a coordinated engagement.

HogHead is out of Kilgore.  Heard from him today.  He offered up his shop and assistance and I very much look forward to meeting him.  No definite date set as of yet for his ET wrench party but sure don't want to conflict. Not sure my rubber will last that long but that's only me. Could go to the darkside soon here locally.  I know I'm repeating myself and what others have said, however this board and the people it is comprised of are fantastic.  Your consideration, kindness and knowledge are a joy.  Blessings  Woody

The only dates in June that I have available are the 18th and the 25th. I might be able to do one in May but won't know that for a few more days. As far as conflicting it doesn't really matter to me if ya'll have one the 1st weekend in June. If we see a need to do another one in June we will go from there. We might consider doing a ET ride instead.

McKinney would be great for me. I doubt I will need any wrenching as I am in process of making my Valk more user friendly now.

I will try to make either or both depending on the weekends y'all end up setting up and work schedule. If neither conflicts with work I'll go to both. I'd really, really like to see a carb sync done and meet some new folks.

I liked Disco's idea so much I copied it.  If you have a specialty plate, follow Disco's lead.

Hey Christbiker,

That's a full day's work, but doable with the proper help, tools, and supplies.  If it's to be done in one day, an early start, a late sunset, and access to tire-changing equipment will also help.  And, of course, vittles!

A ride to Kilgore sounds great, but it sounds like we need to get started sooner than June.  I like the idea of getting fresh rubber on the bike as close to home as possible.  That way, if we run into something in the final drive, etc, that would prevent us from reassembling the bike the same day, you're not stranded.  Pads at the same time as tire/final drive.  If we have extra hands/time, fluids.  If we have extra brains, electrical.

I'm eager to help - either directly on anything non-electrical, or by making sure the football is where it needs to be when it's needed.

Like Flyboy, my May weekends are filling up, but with a little planning, we should be able to get things started.  Evenings work for me.  You?

Well, I need new rubber soon.  I'll take care of that this coming week and just as well have the rear brake pads installed then too.  FlyBoy, are you still up for some early June wrenching?  Maybe just changing the fluids and electrical and I'll try to do the rest myself.  Or, yes Disco I can be available most nights to get some of the simpler stuff done.  How long does a carb sync take?  I doubt if one has been done on this bike.   Blessings,

Woody

Getting new rubber is a perfect time for doing the final drive maintenance.  We have everything we need in the football, including o-rings.  Flyboy has lots of o-rings, too.  Rear pads are a snap.

Carb sync is no biggie (thanks Flyboy!  cooldude).

I am still lurking on this post. I was just waiting to see what was going to be decided about trying to have another wrench party along with the E TX party that is in the works. I did not want to step on someone elses plans. I will be available to help in any way I can. I do need to get the carb sync gages from whom ever.

As I stated in my earlier reply go ahead and have one and we will see if there is a need for another after that.  Lets get Woody fixed up. If you have it on the 1st weekend I will be able to make it. I need some expert opinions and on my carbs. Maybe TJ can bring that fancy smancy ex. breathalyzer thingy. Someone might need to examine my head too. 2funny

Here's the latest of what's happening to my ride.  I will be getting new tires and rear brake pads on her this Wednesday.  They will take a look at the final drive at that time as well.  Any other work previously discussed here, it would be fantastic too have done at what looks like a wrench party falling together on the 1st weekend in June.  FlyBoy, can you confirm that?  I am trying to get some of the more time consuming things done outside of a W P so others can benefit too.  Hopefully she will need a carb sync, some electrical, fluids changed and very minor stuff then.  Disco has contacted me but we have not co-ordinated anything as a side job yet.  I can't thank you all enough for your generousity and care.  Blessings,  Woody

Well, I just found out today that the 4th is Graduation day for Melissa HS and being as involve with my community as I am, I can not miss the graduation ceremony. Would the 11th work? I know it is Fathers Day weekend, but after all, we should get a kitchen pass on that alone!! Or are you available during the week?

That is fine with me. I just wanted to be able to help Woody if he needed more immediate repairs and did not feel he should ride for 3 hours to get it done. But I am open for a later date. After InZane would probably be a good time to have one so we can address any problems that arise on the trip.

Well HogHead, looks like it's u-turned back toward East Texas.  With the great tutorage of Disco,
I now have new rubber, wheel bearings and a final drive that looks like it just came of the shelf.  Again Dave, I can't thank you enough, enjoyed the fellowship and gained knowledge.   All the other items of need can wait until they can be addressed.  Blessings,   Woody

You're welcome, Woody.  We all feel much better knowing that you're rolling on fresh rubber and new bearings/seals.  Just don't say anything to anyone about the hatchet...  Your rear pads will last way past the next WP, so no hurry there.

And for the curious, we don't know when the last final drive service was on Woody's bike, but everything came out well-lubed.  It's a (very early!) '97 Tourer with 56,XXX on it but only the last 2,XXX are Woody miles.  The driven splines (star) and hub show perhaps 20% wear - not pristine, but with proper maintenance in the future, they will last many, many miles.  The two fat o-rings were still very pliable and only slightly squished.  We pulled the big skinny o-ring during the cleanup phase and it was still pliable, but seemed to be getting tired.  When I went back with the new big skinny o-ring, I couldn't get it to seat, so I got the pick back out to clean the groove.  Surprise, there was another, probably original, o-ring still in the groove.  It looked more like greasy, black dental floss than an o-ring.

Oh, and one 6004 front bearing and the 6204 single-row rear were junk.

The driveshaft and pinion cup look brand new.  As Valkpilot observed, given the wear on the star and hub, they probably are brand new.  Speaking of brand new, all three brake rotors appear to be brand new, too.

I believe Woody got a good one.  Next up: the electrical gurus...
