Some friends of mine were in the Deals Gap area a couple days ago.  They were a couple miles from the tail of the dragon actually when a crotch rocket came around a corner, crossed the line and his left passenger footpeg caught my friends front wheel.  The impact busted the lip of the wheel, debeaded the tire and sent the bike into a violent death shake.  The rider bailed and the bike (obvioulsy) crashed and is most likely lotalled.  The rider of the crotch rocket didnt even stop.  Im not willing to give him the benifit of the doubt that he was unaware of the impact.  Just not buyin it.

There are several bad things riders are taught growing up.  One is that its ok to use more than your lane when on twisties.  Its not ok, if you cannot stay in your lane, then you need to slow down regardless of the fact the rider you are following can handle it.  Crossing the line is like running a red light

BTW the rider is ok, minor road burn through his jeans that werent burned all the way through, but not a scratch.  However, for anyone that hasnt ridden in that area, theres not a lot of room, it could have been much worse

I tell riders to keep in the right half of their lane. There's too many riding poseurs showing off for the many cameras pointed at them.

Speaking of that... What we see a lot of is riders hugging the center line. We see it all the time, sometimes riding two abreast, sometimes staggered, but the tires are inches from the center line and the pegs and fairing are hanging over the line. This is on straight roads. oncoming cars will have two wheels on the shoulder. My father bitches about it all the time too.

Chris, now you know why I won't ride the Dragon. I'm not worried about my capabilities to handle it, I've simply seen too much of the "other" guy causing problems. I don't need that, there are many other beautiful rides throughout that area.

My oldest son goes down to Deals Gap every year and rides it on his Pacific Coast.  He says that it's the greatest ride ever............ I disagree.  I don't think that it's any different than 'The Snake' but a lot more dangerous due to its reputation and the numbnuts that have to prove something.

As you said John, you're putting your life in your hands because of poseurs and bragging rights.  There are exceptions like Smokin' Joe and others who do it for the ride only and have the experience and I tip my helmet to them.

As for me, I don't believe that I could ride it as the intense concentration needed from me as a flatlander, soon leaves me and it becomes dangerous for me and others.  Besides, I have nothing to prove anymore.

I would take the Cherohola instead and ride it as it fits my advance years,  Wink

Great points all.  I guess what was in my mind when I typed the original post was this:

When I started riding with a Harley rider buddy of mine, I didnt know until it was too late that he was taught AND BELIEVED IT that one should NEVER use front brakes.  That caused our wreck in Dec 09.  I have since learned there are other misinformed riders out there that refrain from front brakes and mistakenly feel they can safely use rear brakes only for EVERY situation.  WRONG!!!

Maybe there are some here that have been taught they can use up to 150% of a lane (up to half the wrong side lane) if they need it and that is acceptable.  (I have heard this taught)  It is unsafe, in many places illegal and will get someone hurt (or worse) 

If posting the RIGHT ways to ride safely every once in  a while gets even one person that was taught wrong to reconsider then even though we can never know it prevented a mishap I know it will increase safety for that one and others in the path of destruction

Near here we have a nice twisting road known as the Goat Trail.  It has a lot blind curves going up and down the side of the mountain.  EVERYTIME I ride that road, someone crosses the line coming the other way.  Cars, trucks, bikes,....it doesn't matter.  Sucks!

Rear brakes only is so true! I had a roadie that always loaned me his BSA, hard-tailed, front kicked, ape-hung squirrel mobile! I'd always scare myself silly 12 times in about 2 miles on that thing! Maybe the roadie was tryin to kill me to get to my girlfriend! coolsmiley

Got a few decent twistys here in the ozarks-couple roads up around Emminence mo that the idiots on the crotch rockets seem to take over on the weekends. It ain't a dairy queen but similar-gals inside there last year warned me about it. Those bozos think nuthin about takin what ever lane is handy-mine or theirs. Gets a tad interesting at times. uglystupid2 I really don't want to go head to head with anything at all ever. That being said-some clown somewhere will force the issue-he better get me the first time cause if he don't. RIDE SAFE.

I Grew Up riding dirt bikes, and learned quickly that over zealous use of the front brake could easily make you kiss the dirt.

As a result I do tend to use the front brake a little more sparingly than others.

Although I've never had a problem grabbing plenty of front brake when the situation calls for it.

Thats the key though....when you need them you use them........the ones that wont I dont ride with them if I know it
