Is the Interstate smaller than a Standard?

I have a 98 standard that came with mustang seats on it when I purchased it, so I cannot compare to oem seats.  Im 6' tall, and have lots of room on the standard with mustang seats, when I look down, I have about six inches of seat between me and the fuel tank.   I just purchased a 99 intersate with oem seats. On the Interstate, Im hugging the fuel tank and have no leg room.  What is the problem here.  Does the interstate have less room, will changing seats make a difference, or does the standard have more room, or is it just the mustang seat.   I need to fix this as Im to cramped up on the Interstate.  Also can the rear upper trunk be moved back any further to give my wife more room?

The Interstate tank is slightly larger, so, by implication, the Interstate saddle is slightly shorter.  It really shouldn't be enough for you to notice.

I have both on my I/ S I have the ultimate seat which sates me down 1” and moves me forward on the tour I have the mustang seat and it is just a little higher off the ground than the stock seat and it sets me back a little bit. Also the handle bars are wider than the I/S .  With all this said ridding the tour I am more spread out than on the tour but I have no leg problem.  As for the gas tanks they are both the same length the I/S is just a little taller.

That is true.  They are the same length.  The Standard saddle, though, climbs slightly up the tank which it is unable to do on the Interstate.

the IS tank is taller at the rear (comes back and up a bit more-same mounting point as the std. but is a tad longer in the rear before it tapers to where the mount is, and the mount is at the same place as a std./tourer)  and the seat is a tad shorter to accommodate it. The std. seat is longer than the IS as the std. tank tapers to the mount at a shallower angle.
Other than the seating postion, they are the same size. Could be more of a visual thing since the tank and seat relationship is different. The stock IS seat may not let you sit as far back as the Mustang on the std.
The handlebars are different-don't have dimensional differences.

Not only that but Mustang doesn't sell an I/S seat.  They say their seat will fit Standards, Tourers AND Interstates.

Hi i moved my trunk back 2 1/2 inches for my lady -- I looked and looked on the internet for a kit they made to move the trunk back and could not find one --I took 2 strips of aluminum 1/4 in thick cut it 3 in. wide and mounted it on the old bolt holes for the trunk -- Drilled holes 2 1/2 inches back and remounted the trunk --worked great for her   alot more room --space between seat and backrest of pass. has a bigger gap but put a piece of leather to cover the gap --she can sit back farther and so can i --2 1/2 inches dont seem like much but it did make a big diffrence -- we are both more comfortable --especially on longer rides --

I think the IS "feels" smaller too.

I also think there is a LOT in the set up.  The 1st IS I ever rode seemed WAY smaller than my STD.  But the one I Own only a little bit so. 

The seat is probably making a big ergonomic difference to you IMO.  Try putting your IS seat on your Tourer and see how that feels. 

I think the bars need tweaked a little too as a tiny amount of rotation in the bars can make a HUGE perceived difference in how the bike feels.

One thing that is also different on the Interstate is the previous owner installed taller handle bar risers which could also be making me feel cramped up. I think I will leave them on  there though as I think this will help my arms and shoulders from getting fatigued on long rides.  So......Maybe just switching to another brand of seat on the Interstate may give me more leg room.  Sure would be nice to try before you spend $1000.  Problem is, do you go with the bigboy seat, or the king big boy seat as Im only 6' tall I wonder if I could still place my feet on the ground with the king big boy.

Chances are there is a VRCC member close enough that would be willing to let you try out either a BigBoy or King BigBoy.  Post your location or modify your profile to tell us where you are at.  Or, you could start a new thread asking if anyone in your area would be willing to do a seat swap.

That's the route I went and I sure am glad I did.  (Thanks again, Flask).  I thought I just needed the BigBoy, but after riding on one I realized it was just a tad too cramped.  So, I went with the King.  I've put a whopping 80 miles on my new seat, but so far - so good.

I was switching from a Standard seat for solo to my I/S seat with a backrest for longer trips when I put the trunk on. The I/S seat sat more forward and higher- The bars were closer and I could see more over the windshield.  I think this is to make more room for the passenger. Since I got the standard bracket for my Utopia backrest I wont be switching- Unless i need to go 2 up. Might just get a pad to keep in the saddle bag to put on the fender if I need to take a passenger. Anyone done that?

1134 No, they are both the same size. The I/S is heavier. Why do you think the auto manufacturers started making so many different vehicles on the same platform. The engineers at Honda or any other manufacturer aren't that stupid.

I'm headed for a Kingboy myself. The only way I can get room om my 2K I/S is to stretch out on the hiway pegs. If I had to ride feet down on the footpegs I could barely ride 50 miles.

Im in Grand Forks North Dakota.  anyone ride an Interstate with king bigboy that is 6' or shorter, If so how does it fit and is there plenty of more leg room?

I swapped the OEM for a solo mustang seat on my 2000 Standard.
The Mustang seat is about one inch taller, more comfortable and supportive. It looks nicer too.
I dropped the rear of the bike 1-1/2 inches, which enhanced the support characteristics of the seat
and improved the handling of the bike...  very pleased!

Having said that, I have recently developed a weird pain on my right hip. When I get on the Valk,
the pain is excruciating... the Doctor says that I'm just an old sack of bones and  ought to get back
riding my 66 Lincoln!    ???

Meanwhile, I have added the adjustable highway pegs, but so far have not found a comfortable set up for them. 

The tricks I play for immediate pain relief is to place my ass at the top rear edge of the seat while riding;  alternatively stand on the floor-boards while riding ...or place my left foot on the freeway peg while letting my right leg dangle 1" of the pavement.

To be sure, the pain has been there for a while and it comes on even as I am driving most of my cars.
Interestingly, I experience very little pain when riding my '77 naked Gold Wing GL1000.
Yes, less painful than sitting in front of the TV!
