I bought my val. 99 I/S new in 2001 very soon after put on rattbars shifter was very disapointed with the lateral mouvement of the shifter tryed many different things to remove this. worked on this for some time and was ready to put the stock shifter back on the bike . I also have the lowering kit from rattlebars, I dont live far from chet and was going to tell him of my mod. but I see on this forum that he has retired. this mod. will make chets heel+toe shifter flawless it has been on my bike since and has always been tight and right.{ here it is} take the shifting bar,  set it on a peice of plywood build a jig with wood on both sides of the flat part of the shifter leaving the round part in open lock this plywood to your drillpress get a 3/4 tunston carbide forsner bit before you drill the holes go to your local bicycle shop and ask for two of the sealed bearings that are used in the wheels of the higher end bikes.  ask for the 3/4 bearings with the 5/16 axill hole in the center  measure the thickness of the bearings and mark the forsner bit with some tape at this depth. {note the bearings might be metric so take a tape to the bike shop } also you might want to fill the hole on the shifter with a peice of wood to help center the bit go slow when drilling so you don't mess up the crome, drill both ends of the round part keep it centered!!  make sure the new cups are the same size as the bearings outer race tap the bearings into place and rebolt.  { put a nut on the back of the bolt and use it as a ajustment bolt to take out the wobble and put the shifter bolt back in the mounting hole. {note if you want even better shifter responce go to the oval hole take off the kick lever and take some of the freeplay away from the oval hole by putting spacer on the shift bolt. I drilled the hole out on the stock arm that runs the shifter this is the treaded hole fore the shift peg and mached both the kickers my spacer is made out off a metal filled peice of pvc used for water this shell doesn't scratch the crome in the oval hole and in 10 years shows very little ware.  If there are any ? just ask  I know I can't be the only one that had this problem.
