i have a 49cc scooter that i've been having trouble with.  it did run great last year, but for some odd reason it won't stay running!  there are two screws on the carb, i place both of them at 1 1/4 turns and nothing, if i turn the second screw out further, like 4 turns, it will start, run fast for about 3 seconds, then quit.  there seems to be plenty of fuel, probably too much 'cause when i remove the spark plug it's drenched with gas.  BUT WHEN I TURN THE SCREW IN, IT DIES!!

here's a picture of what i'm dealing with.  which screw should i be playing with??  thanks.

Ok just from what I see it is a slide carb there shouldba a cable running to the top right Ok well the screw by the throat or where the air enters is the mixture screw be it air or fuel and I think the other is the idle or stop screw the more you screw it in the higher the idle as it holds the piston up or lets it down depending on how far out or in the screw is.

Yep I agree with what was already told, the one near the throat I would think is the air fuel mixture screw and the one near the centerline is the actual idle/speed screw, that's what I would guess withought holding it my own hand.

So, do you have the choke in the on or off position?
Are you trying to run it with the air filter on or off?

I would pull the choke to on and set crank the idle screw up a little at a time till she runs then adjust to your liking from there. Sounds like your running plenty rich if your pulling a wet plug out, oh make sure once you get it running at all swap out the plug(with a brand new one) for fine tuning then if you need to swap plug at a later date then make sure this old one is well cleand up.  I like cleaning fuel fouled plugs with carb cleaner and some sort of Blue tip wrench (torch).

Good luck.

Looks like a two stroker with oil injection at the carburetor.

So that could mean the wet spark plug could be from the oil.

If it ran good last year there would be no reason to change any adjustments.

I would suggest stopping the oil injection and mix up a little gas with outboard oil in the correct dilution and pouring that mixture in an empty tank.

This should eliminate any problem with the oil injection clouding the picture.

Get the motor running any way you can with any adjustment.

Once it gets warm you should attempt to get the motor to idle by backing out the screw that raises the carburetor slide while using very slight adjustments to the mixture screw.

I would suggest to not mess with the needle that is attached to the slide since it ran good last year.

Once you have it running properly a change back to oil injection should not make any difference with a fill up of fresh gasoline and oil.
