Thanks for the pictures. Do you recommend using the star washers, or just the mounting hardware that comes with the rack?

use the star washers and rubber washers under them.  The trunk lid is double layered...you will want to spread out the load a little to help keep from cracking the lid.  Also, when you close the trunk...do not use the rack to close it.  Puts a lot of pressure on the lid in the wrong place.

The rubber washers will seal off the holes so your trunk stays dry.

As for marking where to drill the holes...get yourself a roll of the blue painter's tape (you can use any color really).  Place that on the trunk lid.  Place the rack on the lid where you want it to do and have someone mark around the legs.  Find the center and drill the holes.  As long as you didn't move the rack while marking, everything should line up as you wanted it to.  During installation, start all your screws but hold off on tightening them until you gat them all started...helps align things.

Appoligize for having my ugly mug in the photo, but here is a Kury type rack with the star washers.

As stated above, use a rubber washer under the star. After drilling I placed a piece of duct tape on the inner lining and used a small amount of window/door type foam fill insulation to go in the dead space between the layers.  Not expanding foam!. Once it sets up , redrill the hole and you're ready for the install. I also used rubber washers on the inside with a large washer similar in size to the star washers. Don't over tighten!
