The blame is on her. But from what i see high speed pursuit never comes out good. Someone always dies and its not the driver or the officer.   tickedoff

And as i shifted into 5th I couldn't remember a thing she said.

The article doesn't say anything about a high speed pursuit.  It says the driver took off with the deputy hanging onto the window.  It looks like the driver was driving crazy to get away and ran a red light.

Ya know, this re confirms my conviction that anyone who kills who is DUI should be charged with murder.

Should you really use the terms "my conviction" and "murder" in the same sentence?

I'm sure the drunken meth head took them on a VERY LOW speed pursuit across 2 Florida counties befor a small traffic infraction killed a cyclist.

I doubt it was low speed, in the article is says the trooper saw the impact from 1/2 mile away. Metal and dirt flying in the air.

".......when she sped through a red light, investigators said."

Granted, calling it a "high speed" chase may be an assumption, but I feel the descriptions given and the terminology used should keep us from unnecessarily SPLITTING HAIRS!

I'm sure there are "low speed" chases....in the Rest Home. But on the highway, regardless of the newsprint, common sense tells you otherwise.

Sorry that rider died. You can be out there smellin the roses mindin your own dam beeswax and in less than a heartbeat be sucked into a super bad situation-NOT OF YOUR OWN MAKING. Can it be avoided?? Probably not. Those things just happen to quick. Seen to much from my 40 plus years in the high seat. 18 wheeler to those that don't know. Not even gonna speculate. Let the accident ivestigaters do their thing. They ain't stupid. RIDE SAFE.

I read she had been cuffed.  She then got away and into her vehicle.  Bet the deputy cuffed her in front.  RIP rider.

That was exactly my thought..... if properly cuffed (behind the back) how does she drive away?

When I was 21 I could slip the cuffs down my back and pull my feet thru'.  Skinny little meth addict is probably flexible enough to do it pretty fast. The officer payed a price already and he did it for little compensation, only to be second guessed by people who never walked even a city block in his shoes.

Try it sometime, most departments offer "ride alongs" just to give the public a small taste of what they deal with that would turn anyone into an asshole after awhile !

The deputy is a female.  He father is a Detective with Pasco.  She has less than 2 years with the Sheriff's office.  I agree some can slip from being cuffed from behind, but why was her "situation awareness" not keeping a suspect under control.  We have had several incidents in the county where casual arrests resulted in the bad guy getting control.  Drugs are a serious issue in Pasco, and we pay the police to help stop them.

I agree with the ride along.  Opens your eyes.  I hope our Deputy is not hurt to bad.  The new Sheriff has his work cut out for him.

The article says the deputy stopped her for DUI suspicion.  The perp got loose, and drove about 6 miles up US 19 until she ran a red light and killed the motorcyclist.  Unless the deputy had a backup unit with her (no mention of that), I don't think this was a pursuit.

Charged her this morning;

The Florida Highway Patrol has charged Miles with homicide in addition to charges filed by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. Miles, the daughter of a Hernando County Sheriff's deputy, remains in jail in Hernando County.

And to boot, the daughter of a deputy sheriff.

Good.

While stationed in Turkey, I got a call to respond to a US serviceman POV fatality.  An Army Sgt had killed an old woman who ran from the curb in front of his car.  He was standing by himself and I told him not to talk to anybody till we talked, then went over to the cops to see what they were thinking.  When I got back he was pretty upset, said he had little time to respond, she just ran out in front of him.  I said that was the good news, the bad news was she was the mother of four Ankara Police officers, and two of the cops on scene over there staring at him were her sons.

I'm surprised he survived long enough to talk to you.  I think that if my mother had been hit by a car and killed, I would be seeing too much red to listen to logic about whose fault it was.

[I like to think I'm better than that, but am willing to admit that I probably wouldn't be]

Update to Charges.

1
SPRING HILL --

The Hernando County woman accused of fleeing deputies and leading them on a chase that ended with a fatal crash has been indicted on first-degree murder charges.

According to authorities, Brittany Miles dragged a deputy across U.S. Highway 19 on May 10, then sped into Hernando County, where she hit and killed motorcyclist Henry McCain. Miles had been pulled over in Hudson under suspicion of DUI and deputies placed her in the back of a cruiser to interview her.

Officials said Miles, 21, escaped out of the rolled-down back window of the cruiser, got back into her pickup truck and sped off. Deputy Ashley Grady suffered a broken leg and ankle and head injuries as she tried to stop Miles.

Shortly after that, the pickup slammed into and killed McCain, 67, as he pulled onto U.S. 19 from County Line Road.

Authorities caught up with Miles a short distance away from the fatal crash.

On Tuesday, a grand jury indicted Miles on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated fleeing.

She is being held without bail in the Pasco County Jail, faces additional charges in Pasco.
