Last Saturday I rode to visit my Mothers grave and clean it up and add a wreath. As I pulled out of the cemetary I noticed a cop parked across the street (a common spot to bust those going slightly over the 30 MPH speed limit).
As soon as I pulled out the cop started to chase me down with lights and sirens blaring; I never got a block past the cemetary. I pulled over and waited for the cop to approach me (he already had his hand on his holster). He started by asking why I was riding a "Chopper" through a cemetary? Did Ihave no respect for those greiving relatives and their children? He ranted on that "people like you (me)" have no respect for the dead and those visiting the mothers grave. He kept up this ranting rage, so I interjected that I also cleaned my parents gravesites and arrained a wreath on my mothers grave. He then said it was illegal to ride a motorcycle in a cemetary. He said that if he ever saw another motorcycle that "the rider would land in jail before they knew what was happening".
There are no signs at the entrances or exits,...and in the pas few years I've been in quite a few "Biker" funerals and have never been hassled. As a matter of fact one of those had well over three hundred motorcycles following the hearse to the gravesite with at least five different outlaw clubs from several chapters. All those had police escorts to keep traffic under control.
Why do some cops beleive that they cane simply make up rules and try to intimidate riders? Although I was not intimidated; I was annoyed to say the least. And I guess I would have fought the jail sentence with a countersuit for "Profiling" and intimidation. All I can say is that the Dearborn/Dearborn Hts. police are targeting to wrong people and trying to apease the wrong people (and ethnic groups).
What is happening to this country?

Did you get his badge number? I would report the cop or at least have them show you the statute.

Call your local county court house and see if any such law exists. My guess is no and this douchbag cop needs to be reported.

BS. It's not illegal to protest funerals, and it's for damn sure not illegal to ride a motorcycle in a cemetery. I've been to HUNDREDS of funerals and never heard this bs.
If he was as pissed as he seemed, he'd have wrote you a ticket if there was a law on the books.

I agree with most of you that I should have reported and/or filed a claim. I guess I was not thinking clearly after this incident.
Quite a few Michigan communities are "cracking down" by allowing the local police to write BS tickets knowing that most people would rather avoid court and just pay whatever fines may be levied. It is especially prevalent in communities where tax revenues have fallen due to the current economic conditions.
I am an ABATE officer, so I should know how to handle this intimidation tactic. In February I went to a seminar at our ABATE of MI Convention on just this type of police tactic, and I did not respond accordingly.

George first I am sorry you had such a bad experience with an LEO
IMHO you should do the following in order 1, get his badge number and name 2 tell him to call for his supervisor if you disagree for the reason for the stop 3. if he does not comply call 911 and report the incident but turn the bike off 1st so you dont get a ticket for using cell phone and request a car be sent to the scene to log your report 4 file a Notice of Claim against the Police Department and the Town or County If a State cop file it against the State of Michigan You may have a cause of action for intentional infliction of emotional harm among other torts If you had a passenger you also have a slander case if what he said was what you related. 5 file a complaint with the police itself 6. notify the cemetery that you were waylaid by the police from whatever jurisdiction and expect them to write to the precinct commander their displeasure 7. notify your local newspaper so they can run a story...they can also help you find out who the cop was and you can FOIL for the badge number of the officer at the location at the time if the police wont fess up notify your local and national PGR
that should keep you busy for awhile
There is NO LAW prohibiting motorcycles at cemeteries If he gave you a ticket he could be guilty of knowingly filing a false instrument I have ridden many PGR missions to cemeteries

Momz,
First off, let me say that there are cops that don't belong in uniform just like there are doctors that should not be in the OR, or teachers that should not be in a classroom. I agree with OSS, file a complaint, this mutton head should be reported or he will continue his ways and make a bad name for all the cops that are doing their job as they should.
I worked with a few bad cops in 26 years, departments have a way of weeding them out, but not unless they are reported. That guy was way out of line.

First, if it is a law (or rule, whatever)... it is wrong, and should be overturned. Everyone should have access to a cemetery to pay respects to whomever they choose, no matter what their conveyance.
Second, if it is a law (or rule, whatever), the officer went about it completely the wrong way. In the years I have been involved in that line of work, I discovered very quickly that having an attitude with people will get you no where; more headaches than it's worth.
If you were breaking the law, then write it (ticket, summons, whatever) and go about his business... fight it in court, not in the street. The way he went about it was absolutely wrong in giving you his opinion on it. I suspect if he didn't take any enforcement action (ticket, summons, whatever) then there isn't really a law/rule, or he is plain lazy. If no law... get down to the station and file a complaint, post-haste.

Reminds me of an incident I had a couple years ago, a drunk spun out in my front yard and hit a tree, he tried to leave and I pulled him out of the truck and took the keys. The officer that responded pulled in the yard, and proceeded to ream me out, and threatened me with arrest. Also threatened my neighbors wife, she was 82 at the time as she tried to explain what had transpired. I threw him off my property after getting his id. I Called the main sheriffs office , turns out several in the neighborhood called in also. He is no longer on the force, several complaints about his attitude before. He thought he was a super cop. Thank the good lord all are not like that. If I had not got his ID, nothing would have been done about him.

Take OSS' advice and go for it.
You could also go to the office and talk to the shift commander. Maybe they would be willing to set up a surveillance and you go to the cemetery again and if he is there, pull out and then let his superiors handle it.
He needs an attitude adjustment. That being 'Walking papers' and not allowed to serve on a Dept again. His LEO career, needs to end NOW.

being the dick that i am, i would have gotten on my cycle, driven to moms tombstone, parked, then asked the cop to arrest me. once he did, i'd have all the ammo i'd need to start a loud out cry from other bikers, if he didn't, i'd ask for his badge # so that i could have a talk with his supervisor. although, most likely you'd want to have your helmet on, cause i'm sure you'd get a crack on the head one way or another!!!

Yeah, I suppose a more fun way of getting this guy is just to go make a daily "Momma" run until you meet up with this guy again, and demand to speak to his Shift Supervisor. I'd agree with Oss though.

I admit that I might have also attracted his attention more so because I was wearing my cut off vest with my ABATE of MI colors. I had a stack of flyers in my saddlebags promoting our "Blessed in Hell" bike blessing. After leaving the cemetary I was going to a dealership to pass out those flyers and post our announcement.
For those interested: the "Blessed in Hell" event is on Sunday, May 22nd at the Hell Creek Ranch in Hell MI.(GPS address:10866 Cedar Lake Rd., Pinkney MI.)
We expect this to be the single largest Bike Blessing in the Midwest. We will have four separate CMA blessings to accomadate everyone. Gates open at 10:30 AM, $8.00 single & $10.00 for doubles, live bands, vendors, bike show, tattoo contest, 50/50 girls, and door prizes.

Sounds to me like a good ride idea. Lets meet and ride over there. Multiply state bikes we're bound to get a ticket and think of all the witnesses you would have. I'm not being sarcastic here. I'd stand up for anyone when the jerks are wrong. LEO's use to be respected no matter who they were. But now with all these incidents one questions their motives.
I'd ride up from Texas to do that. Oh no I'm in Michigan right now but he doesn't have to know that. I go to moms grave all the time on my motorcycle. Local cops know who it is when they see my Dark Red Goldwing parked in the Floral City FL Cemetary (pop about 200).
Thanks for the info on the Bike Blessing. Always looking for things to do when I get to a new area.

There is nothing wrong with motorcycles in the cemetary. The last incident was a loud boom-thump passing thru that didn't stop to visit. I guess we should have made them a resident ,as several showed disgust with them and my family would not let me react. Sorry about mom and your experiance , Barney Fife lives on

Do nothing THIS TIME. The Cop was being a brat, you be an adult. LEO's have a tough thankless job, sometimes the only friends they have are other cops. He didn't arrest you or ticket you, so get on with your life. If it happens again, then take all the action listed above.
I'm not suggesting that you should like being treated this way. But life ain't fair or easy, and this was pretty small in the scheme of things. Save your strength for fighting a real bad guy, don't waste it on fighting a good guy having a bad day.

I was thinking of that when I wrote my earlier post G-man. When I got that BS ticket in the Bronx last year for no goggles even tho I was wearing the ANSI safety glasses I wrote the precinct commander and never got an answer. I beat the ticket but did not file a complaint even after he said in front of the judge he will be looking for me. I am still waiting for him to pull me over When we were at the motorcycle show the state troopers had a big sign up stating ANSI safety glasses is what we need now, not goggles Wonder if there will be a "safety stop" at Americade this year. By the way, it says on the side of the NYPD cruisers COURTESY PROFESSIONALISM AND RESPECT I have never received either in NYC but the State Troopers are very polite and I have gotten off with a warning the last two times I was pulled over, once for 75 in a 50 on the Palisades Parkway driving the mommy van with the whole family and once just north of Jackson Avenue 72 in a 55 in my 300m Both times I said yes sir I suppose I was doing what you clocked me I am tired and sorry I was not paying attention Go figure
