Things like those temperature dip sticks are simply more thing to make you worry about what's going on with the motor and the paranoia never stops.
Get a chrome one and be happy!

The first thing I got for my Valk was one of those thermometer dip sticks. I wasn't comfortable with a liquid cooled bike with no temperature guage.

Think you will find that most Valks run from 190 to 200 Deg. Ran for Miles at 75 in 105 Deg and temp was about 195. Shortleg[Dave]

I got one off e-bay, I like it for the temp reading, but it sucks for oil checks. I end up removing it and using my old chrome one when checking the oil, I can't get a good read with temperature one and fresh oil.

A worthwhile addition. On the two Valks I've had with oil temp guages, both ran consistently 205-210. Only from Oct. thru May did they usually run lower. More important than the temp shown is seeing what is a consistent "normal" temp for your bike and then watching for an increase above that "normal". These guages are not precision instruments. Some will say they check with boiling water, OK fine, still an imprecise calibration. Seeing the oil level can be a problem on the stainless guage shaft. I checked the level with a stock dipstick and then filed some cross hatches on the temp/dip stick to make a mark at the full level.

How often has anyone with one of these ever made some immediate change, stop etc. because they saw a "sudden" increase in temp not discernible by temp light coming on or fan coming on and not going off??

How often has anyone with one of these ever made some immediate change, stop etc. because they saw a "sudden" increase in temp not discernible by temp light coming on or fan coming on and not going off?? when riding down to 25F in winter, I want to know that the oil is getting to at least 200F using 95% radiator block gets the temp there, if not water and oil stay about 150F wear increases greatly below 180F. oil temp shoulds always be in the 200-220F range, this burns off water, some acids and some experts state that some of an oils protective additves only work in that temp range. www.bobistheoilguy.com http://www.noria.com/ http://www.lngpublishing.com/LNGmagazine/index.cfm u can get their publications for free usually
