Is it time to replace original shocks just from age on a 99, without even considering how they are working? I will be riding 2 up at 500 pounds from here on out plus country roads. I am thinking I will end what life they have left fairly quick.

I think you are over the load limit on your bike.

Replacing the rear shocks with stock oem is a waste of money.

You need load helper shocks that you can pump up but will give you a stiffer ride.

My stockers were shot at about 85,000 miles. Mushy & wallow-ey if that's a word!  Grin
Put a set of 50K used Interstate shocks back on after a set of Progressive 412s pooped the bed {leaking} just out of warranty.  Angry  Very happy with the I/S shocks. Kim & I ride good 2 up on the I/S shocks set on 5. Thanks to Rick {Flask} for the I/S shocks!
We aint no lightweights either!  Cheesy Shocked

BTW, I still have 1 good used Progressive 412HD {13"} if anyone has a single they would like to sell me or buy mine cheap!

Bite the bullit and get Progressive 440HD's. Also get a bit longer than stock (13"). This will give you more suspension travel. The extra lift will go away when you sit on it. I use Works Performance shocks in stock length but I'm a solo most of the time. Works asks your weight and ride height requirements. Then build shocks just for you. Here's mine.
