The town of Marion, Va. And Tazewell, Va. Have designated and are promoting a new motorcycle and sports car road…that being Va. Route 16 running between the 2 townships… June 4th, 2011 is the inaugural event, called Back of the Dragon, 32 miles of curves over 3 mountain tops and valleys….starting a 9 am at the Crab Orchard Museum which is in Tazewell, Va. They will have motorcycle dealers and car dealers along with other vendors, mountain music, food and exhibits to promote economic development and tourism for the area….I spoke to several of the people putting this event on and they are trying to bring motorcycle riding into the area, to ride some of great roads in the 2 counties and promote more tourism for the local businesses, they already have T-shirts and stickers made up and would like it to be somewhat like Deals Gap and the Snake….

So if you’re not doing anything that day you may want to check it out…I don’t have anything to do with it, but I’ll be there to support the local community, if you want to check out their website click here…..

I've wondered why no one promoted that stretch of asphalt. I hope the event is a success.

I'm looking on the map thinking that Bear Creek Road looks good too... is it?

SR 16 from Marion to Tazewell has been a well known and well kept secret among local riders for many years.

I've often wondered why no-one has promoted it, It compares well with the Dragon and the Snake.

I do hope that the promotion helps (the local economy can sure use the boost) but not too well, If it were to become as popular as the Dragon, I think that would be a bad thing.

Highbinder, "Ginger" and I are thinking of taking some sort of trip that weekend, if we wind up in that direction I'll give you a shout.

Hope this works out for everyone involved. Sounds like a fun roll. Most anything that would help a local economy can't be all bad. RIDE SAFE.

Deals Gap is nicely paved.
Rt 16 is not.

Deals Gap doesn't have lotsa bits of mountain falling on it.
Rt 16 does.

Hope no one gets carried away on 16. Tricky place to land a life flight helicopter.

Riders beware.

Hope it doesn't get over commercial. Rt 16 from the BRP to St. Marys on the Ohio River has to be one of the best sections of road in the USA.

Might be better to wait a while and go, after all the hubbub. Probably
be several idjits there trying to show off. Does look like an interesting
road.

Wow Paul....you make it sound like a dirt road thru the Alps...when's the last time you rode a road based on whether they could land a helicopter near it???  I rode this road just 2 days ago and it was in pretty good shape, the Marion side has always been in good condition and the Tazewell side has new pavement in many stretchs and while I was up there the road department was repairing a big section, so I guess they are preparing for this event....

I believe they are asking folks to come here and enjoy the curves and scenery, not to drag your pegs off, because just like Deals Gap and the rest of the motorcycle roads that are well known you'll end making a donation at the local county seat if thats your reason for riding this road.... Smiley.....now after saying that, it is a dangerous road if you make it that way and sometimes the rocks do fall off the rock ledges that are along some of the roadway, usually after a heavy rain or freeze.....ride your own ride and enjoy the countryside its worth the trip... cooldude

You know we have enough VRCC members within a reasonable distance of this area that maybe we could turn this into a small VRCC gathering.

Darn it Don. You undid all my work at keeping the road relatively quiet.

Every time I've ridden between Marion and Tazewell  (7 or eight) I've seen very little traffic.
