I went to the inspection lanes here in Delaware today to get my 99 I/S tagged.
She failed with flying colors.
Seems that white auxilliary lights are deemed to be blue and not allowed here in Nutbush. Furthermore, we don't allow no flashing brakelights neither.
So I left, annoyed. Turned around and went back for round 2. I explained that the LEDs are not blue, they are close to daylight in color.
"Nope, they're blue, someone might think you're a cop and panic." If that's the case, you better get the police cars and bikes off the road so no one panics. No traction with that argument, seemed logical to me.
I explained that I run them for the same reason as the flashing brake light module, so I don't get dead.

So what's wrong with a brake light flashing 3 times then staying on steady? "Other motorists might think it's a turn signal"
I don't care if they think that as long as they put the phone down and pay attention. Besides, didn't I read a recomendation to flash the brakes when stopping in the Official Motor Vehicle Operators Manual. Wouldn't those other motorists think the same thing whether the flashing is caused by your foot or an electronic device?
"That's true but you must be in compliance or no inspection sticker."

Having reached a dead end, I went into the main building and asked to speak to a supervisor.  I explained the situation and asked him to look at the lights. Now we were outside, on a cloudy day and the lights looked white, he allowed them, but I still needed to make the brake light stop flashing.
So, that was easy.  crazy2

I would have asked to see the regulation concerning modulated brakelights.  Then again you could have tried another inspections place or maybe even your dealer.  I'm lucky.  Mississippi's inspection is basically lights and horn.  I pull up, they barely look at it, issue the sticker and I give them $5.

It's so good to live in California where I don't have to get my bike inspected.

We have inspections here in mo. Just lights horn pays your money and roll on. I check more than they do. Course it's my butt in the saddle. Sides-been known to go for the triple digits now and then.  uglystupid2 RIDE SAFE.

Check your state laws on this.  Flashing brake lights are legal in most states and Canadian provinces, but there are restrictions.  They can't flash continuously - there's usually limits on the duration of flashes, the number of flashes, etc.  Manufacturers of the lights are aware of this and build them to be in compliance with state laws.  The inspection places are too lazy to look it up.

No inspection in Wisconsin, except in certain counties with emissions.

I'm going to check on the rule on modulated brake lights. It was easy enough to short circuit the hot wires to eliminate the flashing and will be just as easy to return it to it's original condition. I doubt I'd ever get a ticket because of it. So every 2 years I'd have to short the wires again to pass inspection.

Still, it's worth getting this cleared up.
The module is a Signal Dynamics Back-Off unit. It flashes 5 times then steady on. They make another model that flashes 3 times then on, who wants to bet that's the one I should have bought?

No inspection in OR either.  Glad, cause I have a Mod units for the headlights and tail light.   Never had a LEO even give me a second look at either of them flashing.

Modulating headlights are legal in every state!

Federal law declares modulating headlight are legal, which takes precedence over state law.

It's not about legal or illegal, or even safety, it's about MONEY, MONEY and MORE MONEY. In Texas, the cost is 14.50 and rising, brake lights, signal lights, horn. If you go to an inspection station, they are not allowed to ride it to check the brakes, most can't ride anyway. The dealer takes it inside and most of those men can ride or probably are requried to ride.

+1 on the modulating headlights are legal in all states. Couldn't find anything on the brakes, though. I run one on mine.

That being said, I ALWAYS hit my brakes in ANY vehicle, 4 or 5 times fast, before putting the brakes on fully, with the exception of the blond texter induced panic stop. So I flash mine, by "hand" (foot??), and what would be the difference between that, and my bike, which does it FOR me?? Sorry, but doesn't make ANY sense at all!

Oh yeah, when you are driving down the road, and see the guy in front of you's brake lights flash 4 or 5 times, then on full, wave - it might be me!!
