Finally got our income tax refund.  It was exactly $1000 off from the numbers that we were expecting.  Then question is “WHY?” ???  nothing changed from the previous year, other then I found that the girl that did ‘em last year put in the wrong amount for our property tax amount.  She put in ½ the amount, so I was expecting more of a refund from the previous year.

It took a good three weeks longer then other years to get our return, I was getting concerned ‘cause I heard of a new identity scam were a crook will apply for a refund using your information and just apply for the minimum earned income amount.

Now I’ve got to gather up all my old tax crap, call the IRS and find out where’s my money!!!

I tell you, we’ve got to have the one of the hardest to understand tax system out there!!

Did you get a letter from the IRS explaining why there was a change in your Taxes? I've had that happen twice and recieved a letter (after the fact) explaining where the error was (in their oppinion).

I believe that is required by the same insane tax law that we have.

If you use the direct deposit option you will get your money much faster than if you request a check. Mine took less than two weeks that way...

There should be an explanation if the amount filed is different than the amount received. Was the difference from the Fed? I know in New York, the State seems to be more diligent in taking their due.
I try real hard to get it right during the year so they do not have any of my money interest free.

i just found out that my wife had gotten a letter from the IRS stating that we couldn't claim our 17 year old daughter 'cause she's got a job and had to pay her own taxes this year!!  my daughter actually had to pay $39 to the feds, and got $160 back from state.....  so, that's why we were short the thousand bucks.....  see, once again, our government is just punishing people for trying to raise their kids to be responceable....  had she been knocked-up, and unmarried  like her cousin, she'd be MAKING money off of the government......

The fact that your daughter is now working shouldn't change your ability to claim her as a dependent.  Did she file her taxes first and claim herself?  If she did, then you would not be allowed to claim her.  But, however, what I have done in the past is, I would claim my dependent daughter and when she does her tax return, she claims "0" dependents (not even herself).  Then, I would figure out how much of a refund she would get had she claimed herself, then I just gave her that amount of money.  Claiming her as a dependent on my taxes gave me a much better benefit than she would get by her claiming herself, so I just paid her what she would have gotten had she claimed herself. She gets the same refund amount and I get a better refund because I claim her as my dependent (since I am in a higher tax bracket than she), which she was.  After all, she is still a dependent, as I have to pay for all her needs.  She just used the part-time job for spending money.
