I've run mine both ways and didn't see any difference.    Currently I have the pre-filter in,

As RJ has, I've run mine with & sans.

I decided K&N has the engineers, test equipment and the wherewithal to know what's best, so I use the pre-filter now.

Does the K&N give more power and help with mpg?

Hard to tell. I don't think the previous owner ever changed it. It was filthy & starved for air when I replaced it.

It would have to help if it was that dirty! I've got a K&N for the Valk  but haven't put it on yet. I know it made a big difference on my twin and modified the airbox, in both power and mpg. I am going to put it on and hope it ups the mpg.  Wink

where do you get a prefilter ?

It comes with the filter from K&N.
It's an open-cell foam filter that fits over the entire air filter.

Also, the K&N has the complete gaskets [top & bottom] integrated into it. If you remove the OEM upper & lower o-ring gaskets the air box will nestle down over the K&N like it should. [save 'em].

Where are y'all finding the best place to get he K&N filters from? I'm due for a filter change and may give that filter a try.
