I have six into six pipes. when changing the air filter i noticed the carb boots were ether folded up allowing air in or they were loose. so i fixed them and i also noticed a large tube about 3/4 running down towards the trans that was off so i put that back on. that being said the bike has been a little harder to start cold and it is running very rich and pipes are of course turning dark blue. can someone shed some lite on this how do i lean it out or what should i do?

The problems you found would have caused a lean condition. If the Prev owner "fixed" that problem, he/she probably enriched the carbs. 6-6 pipes usually came with adjustable needles. Take the carb tops off and set the needles on the 2nd notch down from the top. They are probably set at the 3rd or 4th notch from the top now to compensate for the problem.

Just wondering how you determined that the motor is running "very rich"!

Or, are you assuming that because of the pipes?

Good point Ricky-D.

Which brings up a couple of questions.

I thought running lean caused the engine to run hotter, thus the exhaust hotter.
And that 6 into 6 pipes were single walled which are prone to turning colours anyway.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

cobra needle instructions set them to rich to gain back some HP. raise the clip one notch, and set idle mixture screws 2 to 2 1/2 turns open.
cobra still has the install sheet for their kit on line.

Mine ran a tad rich with the stock air cleaner and cobra 6x6 pipes.  Changing to the K&N without the prefilter leaned it too much, with the prefilter was just right.  Kinda like the 3 bears story

You don't indicate whether you are the original owner or not! Likewise regarding the exhaust system. DIY or some thing other?  More information from you will be helpful rather than respondents having to make guesses as to what you have!

Smoke reports from riders behind you are usually because of burning oil so a compression test would be indicated.

Revving in the drive is a not a reliable test for anything except for ability to run!

Strong smells are pretty normal for a Valkyrie, even more so when using the enrichment!

Yes Ricky, it does seem that you have a Hard on for me for some reason! I did not put the pipes on they came on the bike I asked the owner if the carbs had ben jetted for the pipes. he assumed they had. the pipes were on the bike when he became the second owner. They started blueing real bad after i changed to k/n air filter and repaired the air leaks. so does that mean it is running lean? getting to hot? what can i do to fix the problem? i have never had the carbs off. I know nothing about them. but i am some what mechanically inclined. I am sure i could handle the adjustments if need be. I am just trying to utilize this tech forum to help me find the answer from more seasoned Valk owners. So what do you think Ricky? You are not that far away from me. Maybe I could bring it to you for the repair? I would be more than happy to compensate you for your time and Vast amount of knowledge. And if you needed more information i would be right there for you to ask.
