It should start in gear, with the sidestand up and clutch pulled in. If the sidestand is down it will not start unless it is in neutral.

If none of the above fits your criteria check the little brass bushing in the clutch handle.    The one the bolt goes through to hold the lever on.    It might be egg shaped and not completly getting the contact in where it should be.

Most of the time its the neutral switch right next to the lever....the other day mine started doing the same thing, so I changed the switch and did not fix the problem...put on a different lever and put the old switch back in and it worked fine...just a worn lever.. cooldude

I have the adjustable Kury GL1800 levers. If I dial the clutch back too far, it won't start in gear because the tab won't push the little button. I dial it out a notch and it's OK. You could build up the tab with nail polish or something to push the button better.

Pretty normal!

I think you maybe are wrong about it ever starting in gear unless certain conditions were met. Which would be side stand up and clutch lever pulled fully "in".

The clutch lever switch is easily accessible and the contacts are easy to get to, so checking with a continuity tester is fairly simple.

The side stand switch is pretty reliable and when there are problems they usually stem from a broken spring bolt and improper reassembly.

Ditto for me. After replacing bushing and side stand switch I discovered the lever was worn too much to activate the switch. cooldude

I'm not Cattman ... but this might help`:
Valk clutch lever bushing
Suzuki part number 59892-08A00   $3.05
Honda part Number 2285-MBO-006   $10.00
Both are identical ... your choice!  Cool

Interesting, My 99 I/S ,28k, just started doing the same thing. I think it is in the clutch lever, but I will be interested to find out what you discover.

I think the bushing peoople are talking about is #2 in the drawing.  It actuates the clutch master cylinder by pushing #1, but not the switch. The bushing that is part of the lever through which the lever mounting bolt goes is not replaceable.  When it wears into an oval-shaped hole it prevents the switch from working and the whole lever must be replaced.

Mine does this every couple of years.  I pull the switch off, clean the points thru the little window in the switch and put it back on.    Takes about 5 minutes and its good to go for another couple of years.  I think the points oxidize over time.

Thanks...I guess the information about it no being unreplaceable was right...I'm glad you cleared that up for me, I would have just order a few and been very disappointed when they arrived... cooldude
