Ok, so I'm looking through the service manual, and the air filter on this bike is due for a change.

Now, I'm not big on taking the tank off the bike myself - I don't have a lot of good luck pulling big parts off the bike by myself so I'm probably going to have the dealer (groan) do it so I minimize the downtime and avoid things like major dings in the tank. I can do bolt on and bolt over work, but pulling major pieces always ends up with problems like hoses crimped, etc.

Since they are going to have to remove the tank, and the fact that this bike is as old as it is, are there things that I should have the mechanic check while they are in there?

Bike only has 13K miles on it, so it shouldn't be due for anything major that I can tell by the service chart, but since it is older, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Also - I've read the K&N Threads, and I'm thinking that I'm going to bite the bullet and pay for one of those.  That way, when/if I get to a wrench party, i can learn from people who do it, and have the part ready to go.  Smiley

As always, thanks for your pointers.

Luckily most parts on the Valk that need maintenance are easy to get at.  The only time I've needed to remove the tank, other than to change the air filter, was to run wires from under the seat or side covers to the front.  I've done this for a lighter-style power outlet, a Stebel horn, and the aux input to the stereo on my IS.

If you decide to remove the tank yourself, it is very easy.  Just put a big rag under the petcock BEFORE disconnecting any hoses.  It's easy to spilll some gas, and that's been known to damage the chrome on the plastic alternator cover.  Also be sure to disconnect the big knob from the petcock.  There's a tiny phillips screw in the center.
