I think the Tail of the Dragon is peaceful and scenic the way that I ride it.  angel

I don't split lanes and I don't risk my life or my passenger riding in a manner that I'm not comfy with.
I'll admit it.
Neat list.

I'll have to agree with Britman, I've rode them all three and they are must do rides. The only thing scary about 50 across Nevada would be when the Mormon crickets cross the road and the dead bug juice makes it slick as ice. 85 miles is the farthest strech between gas pumps on 50.

I don't understand the scary part of Hwy 1 in California.   I worked that puppy on a motor for about 5 years with no problems.    It is one very nice scenic ride on a motor, ya miss too much in a cage.......

Unless you are afraid of height and then you is only a foot or 2 off the roadway.........

We rode Highway One/Big Sur. It was beautiful. The Bixby Creek Bridge was a highlight.

We rode Tail of the Dragon in 1966 and 1967. Beautiful ... not scary.

We rode State Highway 170 (the River Road). It was beautiful. The only scary thing was the open range.

The scarriest road we have ridden (and I had to U-turn before the top) was the Mount Washington Road in New Hampshire.

    Tail of the Dragon
North Carolina/Tennessee

Tucked just below Great Smoky Mountain National Park, the sinuous “Tail of the Dragon” is an 11-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 129 between Tabcat Bridge, Tenn., and Deals Gap, N.C.

"Get ready for 318 curves, many of them monster switchbacks and hairpins, as well as a series of steep “S” curves called The Slide".

I found the pucker factor to be higher on Mt. Evans than on Mt. Washington, but unpaved doesn't bother me at all. Cheesy

Tail of the Dragon  not scary
Saddle Road Hilo to Kailua Kona  not scary
Highway 1 Monterrey to Morro Bay  not scary
They must have rode them with the fog bank/clouds were rolling in.   That would be a horse of a different color but if the weather is good none of these are scary.
Saddle Road is not scary, but running off the road and rolling in that rock hard, sharp as hell lava makes my butt pucker just thinking about it.  The winds can really get up  up there too.
Monterrey to Morro Bay is a really nice road too.  Morro Bay waterfront is way cool destination for a Sunday afternoon.
The other roads I have not a clue about.

I've been on all but one of those roads and realy had  great rides, Perhaps the author of that article should run the by-pass around washington DC or drive interstate 80 through Il. Or how about going through Atlanta in rush hour. Different knids of scary for different knids of folks I guess

Curious about what caused you to "U-turn" on Mount Washington?  We have a family reunion at Winnepasaukee every summer and I finally had one of my Valks up there last summer with the intent of "planning an assault" on that beautiful mountain.  Unfortunately the week I was there during July last year, it rained EVERY SINGLE DAY (even had some tornados which is rare for that part of the country).  It seems that you are fairly well traveled, so I am curious as to what spooked you on the way up that mountain!

P.S. - On a personal note, I did have a scary experience on Mount Washington when I took the "Cog Railway" trip up the mountain!
