I was putting my new VTX-treme trees on and figured I'd show how I pull a tough to get at inner race...

Made a few spot welds with my tig torch...

Took an old bent screw driver... and pulled it out.

It's not the heat, it's the shrink, I could hold it in my hand, and did not burn the paint.

I used one of these. Set the curved end piece to almost straight out and lock it down. It's pinned at the joint and is hardened steel so you aren't going to hurt it. Stick it in from the top and rest the sharp end on top of the race, a couple good whacks. Shift 180 deg. and repeat. Took me a full 60 sec. at the most and the race was out. I sold my MIG but found this was faster, by the time I uncovered and dragged out the welder. Cheaper too.  Wink

Very "cool" info Jeff. The shrinkage occurred immediately by itself or did you use a damp rag ect??

No cooling involved. It was cool enough to hold in my hand. The welds pull the metal in and shrinks them right up.

I have used other methods to pull neck races before, I did this mainly to show how it can be done.

yep, i do that once in a while here at work, i use a wire feed welder, works just as well.  i've had it shrink the race so much that it'll fall out on it's own.

nice pictures by the way  cooldude

What kind of TIG rig did you end up getting?  How do you like it?

Joanne's cousin works at a welding store and got me a whipin deal on a trade in Lincoln squarewave 225. I got the whole rig with a new liquid cooled torch for $800.

not the latest and greatest, but it does a nice job.

Boy, that sounds like a heck of a price for that machine.. Years ago I bought a Lindy 300 for $300,but, the thing is huge.. It also likes to burn up cables, it won't push water through long cables so I have to keep them fairly short and as straight as possible.. Maybe its about time to upgrade..

Wow. that's a heck of a deal.  I've been lusting after some of the inverter-based machines.  For no more than I do, I just can't justify the ones in the blue box though. Have been watching for used ones but considering giving one of the chinese ones a shot.  There's a couple with US based dealers that have been in business several years that are now offering 2-5 year guarantees.  Eastwood is one of them.
