Well it happened again- went to put stand up @ a gas station and it fell right back down. I knew what happened right away. 2nd time this happened in 2 years. 1st time I was by myself. This time I was headed for a poker run with 4 other bikes. 3 HDs and 1 Honda. Not a good feeling when the HD riders are looking at you while you tie up your stand. Made for a rough start to a long day of snickers. Order parts today( what I need pluss xtra to keep on hand). Just wanted to vent, knew you guys would understand.

Be careful... We had a rider in Texas many years ago where that spring broke/fell off and the rider didn't think it'd be a big deal... He died on his ride home... We believed at the time at least that the kickstand fell down while he was in a right hand sweeper, switched to a left turn, and the stand leveraged the bike off it's wheel and caused the accident...
Not trying to be an alarmist, just something to be very careful with...

Thanks- that crossed my mind when I was trying to tie it up. Good pc of insulated wire seems to work very well.- Twisted it tight on the arm of the stand and tied to the passenger floorboard. Does not rub on the exhaust and seems to stay tight- of course, just a temp fix to get home.

another way to look at it.. doesnt matter if it was cause the tie up didnt hold or not,,,if the spring pops off while riding the same thing could happen,,check your spring holder and see if you can find out what is causing it to come off and get it fixed ASAP

I high sided a 1973 Honda C B 500 because I-ME left the side stand down. I don't even want to consider what these big dragons of ours would do with a side stand down. On my 500 one minute i'm in a right sweeper-went into the left sweeper-well i tried to-and it got ugly in a hurry. Lets just say i NEVER left the side stand down again. RIDE SAFE.

If the spring pin at the switch assembly & the hook on the stand are good, your either installing the spring improperly or something else not directly related to the spring system is interfering. Even if the stand is slightly bent, it would have to be somewhat drastic to drop the spring.

Guess I left a key fact out of my statement while venting. The spring bolt/hook broke off. I am not sure why but it did. Ordered 2 from my locat repair guy. 1 for a back up. Thanks for the responses. I don't post often but I do look here for advice all the time. Wonderful group. Thanks for letting me rant. I Think the worst part was the HD riders in the group. Gave them a chuckle but they were also there to help me get it tied up.

Spooky, I did the same on my mid 70's CB 500 four. Only a block from my house. Stand dug in and I couldn't sweep it back with my foot. Went down and slid into a park car's rear tire. No damage except for my ego.

Had to replace the same part on mine last week along with the spring. 2am in the rain on my way home from work in a heavy down poor ,I had very limited sight distance. When maybe two bike lenghts in front of me I saw a four foot piece of truck tire laying across my lane. I swerved and almost missed it . The end was curled up and hit the bottom of the bike removing the stand spring and breaking the bolt that the sping attaches to,it also ripped the wire off my side stand safty switch . The bike died instantly. I managed to rig everything up and got home. Laying on the shoulder of a 4 lane hwy in a down pour at 2am sucks. Then I get my parts in the mail and my new spring is black, not chrome. Oh well I'm alive and the spring funtions.

About 2 years ago my spring bolt broke as we were leaving the driveway for a weekend trip.
I went to the hardware store an bought a bolt the same length with the same threads, I had to "Beef" up the shoulder with Duct tape, but it made a great temporay fix.
As a matter of fact it has worked so well that I have yet to remember to order a new one.

Tbone,
My kickstand spring bolt broke from my homemade jack adapter. After I figured this out, I cut out the spot that hit the spring bolt. Has your bike been on the jack lately? Couldnt find the pic....sorry

It has not been on a Jack and I did not hit anything that I know of. No pics were posted, I have not gotten that talented yet. Would love to post some when I get the hang of it. Found the broken Bolt( hook), and the spring under the bike when it happened. Least I did not loose the spring.

Mine broke last year in my driveway. Took the car to the dealer and bought 3 of them. I couldn't get the spring on until my buddy told me to bend the spring back on itself and push a nickel into each space. We Valk riders always have a few nickels on us, right? When I straitened the spring out it was longer, and I could mount it with a pair of vice-grips. Fred.
