Over a year ago I was posting about getting back into running.......Well then there was a crash and a hurt leg........then there was a year of healing and unfortunately aging as well.  Now, no desire to run, so I dusted off the old 10 speed, got some new tires, greased the bearings and now my work outs are on this.  Much easier on the knees and back.........see, sounds like an old guy talkin.  Anywone wanna go for a ride  2funny

Your'e not old, Chris, I ran an 11 minute 45 second 1.5 mile at cop school when I was 58, smoked about half the class of 75 trainees, mostly in thier twenties and thirtys.  Did I mention I ran fifty miles a week when I was in my thirtys training for a marathon?  I didn't tell them that, though.  Pump away on that bike, did some of that, too, wasn't any easier than the running IMHO.  It's amazing what you can get out of your body if you don't overdo it.  Right on!  I walk briskly 5 miles now 3 times a week,  I'm elegible for medicare next month.  Don't wanna miss all that "free" health insurance.  Hoser   cooldude

If you are putting a lot of miles on that bike, maybe you should run a car tire on it!

I rode that bike in the North Texas "Hotter Than Hell 100" bike race in 1991.  The first 50 miles I kept up with professional racers....averaged 19mph for 50 miles.  The last 50 I let them go ahead and slowed up a bit, but I still finished and in the 4,000 numbers out of 10,000 riders.

Now I just do between 4 and 12 miles at a time

it's inspiring to me to see men my age exercising. I have ran and cycled off and on all my life. As I got older it was it was more challenging. I'm 51 and I still think I can do what I did at 18 and that results in some injuries now and then. At 49 after a 4 yr. break I got back into running. It took  a yr. for my body to quit rebelling. To help keep me motivated I run 5ks and some of the runs that have obsticals such as mud runs and warrior dashes. I am training to do a half marathon by the end of the summer. Staying motivated is the hardest part of it all. I have a bad leg also from a car wreck and it has reeared its ugly head lately and had to take a few weeks off to let my IT band heal. Sad I have had to learn to be patient and take it a little easier than I used to. I just don't bounce back like I used to. I don't cycle anymore due to moving to an area that is not cycle friendly on the street. When i did i bought one of those big fat seats with the springs in it for my boney butt. 2funny

What kind of grease did you use? Looks like the chain needs oil. Are you gonna use dino oil or synthetic?

That Medicare isn't free, it will cost you over $100/month, even having paid into it for all these years. Plus, you get to pay for another policy to cover some of your prescriptions. Oh....and if you're married and your wife is eligible for Medicare, they also take the same amount out of her SS as well. Just trying to be encouraging is all.  2funny

Chris, I do the same thing with my bike. I also used to run all the time but the old joints plus injuries from my stupid years as a teenager...well, they're coming back to bite me now. Add to that a service-related injury and the bike is my exercise friend. There's a bike trail 2-3 blocks away and following the shortest route with it gives me 6.25 miles which I do at least three times a week. I often go off the trail on a couple different routes I've laid out and it gives me about 2.5 additional miles at the least, or additional 4.5 following another route. Every once in a while I'll have some youngster go whizzing by and will comment something like "going pretty slow" to which I answer "come see me in your 70's."  I set a pretty good pace, usually average 10-12 mph depending on traffic. Gives me a good workout and is easier on the knees and hips, plus warms me up in case I feel like hitting the weights when I get home. According to the cardiologist, keep doing what I'm doing because it's better than most of his patients that are 20 or more years younger. All I know is it works for me, don't really care about the rest of them.

Dang I would have given you my Schwinn Varsity instead of putting it out for big pick up a year ago

I do my jogging on a grass soccer field and my knees are hurting even with that  just 2 miles in the morning before breakfast and walk a mile or two on some hills.

Dont like the idea of sharing a lane of traffic and wont go on a 10 speed again.
