My daughter Emily, was telling a friend that her brother, Chris, was training to become a Navy submariner. The friend, who had just been assigned to a Navy destroyer, good-naturedly called Chris a bubblehead. Later I related the story to Chris and asked if he’d heard the term. He said he had and added, “We also have a name for people who work on destroyers.” “What is it?” I asked. “Targets.”

After i got out of the navy i became friends with an ex submariner. He said basically the same thing when i told him i served on an air craft carrier. Only two kinds of ships on and in the ocean-submarines and targets. RIDE SAFE.

I will tell you this. Just keep in mind i'm talking late 50s early 60s tech here. When a sub U S or RUSSIAN or BRIT didnt make any difference whose it was-got under the thermo cline layer(hope my remeberer workin here) for all intents and purposes here-they were lost to us unless they were EXTREMELY noisy. As big as my carrier was-two well placed torpedos would kill my ship-no matter how good our damage control was. A S W 23 attached to the U S S Yorktown C V S 10 was called a hunter killer group. Sounded good when i was 19 years stupid. Now i can'y help but wonder. RIDE SAFE.

I rode on a P3 Orion crew once just for craps and grins. After they finished trying to scare the hell out of me, which they did, but I didn't let it show they opened up a little. They told me that they could find us US Nuke boats most of the time, when we were out there screwing around. But when we decided we didn't WANT to be found... we were simply GONE. They didn't have a chance.
That made me feel a little better about things. I was in from 1989 thru 1994. The end of the cold war. By the time I was dinking around with the Soviets, we both knew nothing was going to happen, and we were pretty much respectful of one another.
