Another one gets settlment for motorcycle crash

WINTER HAVEN -- Florida

A Winter Haven man who was injured in a hit-and-run has been awarded $7.5 million in damages.

James Key II was riding his motorcycle on Feb. 9, 2009 when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Laura Madrigal, deputies said.

Key was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Ledger, he has undergone more than 10 surgeries since the crash.

Madrigal fled the scene, deputies said. She was later arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injury and pleaded no contest in November 2009. She was sentenced to five years of probation.

A lawsuit was filed against Madrigal and the owner of the van she was driving at the time of the crash. The jury reached a verdict Thursday following the four-day trial.

They, of course, don't have that much insurance on the van... hope he gets quite a bit... but will probably never see $7.5 mil.
