Dear DragonRoders,

I know most of you are out riding on such a glorious day, so when you get time, I would appreciate a little assistance on petcock rebuild.  I did mine today.  It went pretty well except for two small guitches.  I am not sure that I installed the vent tube in the right position.  That's the little tiny nipple that lets air into the petcock.  I think it faces downwand when the petcock is in position on the tank ?  Is this correct ?  Also, the strainer did not come out of the tank with the petcock.  I tried to get it out but didn't want to try too hard for fear of breaking it.  Any one else had this problem ?  What's the fix ?  Get it out no matter what, replacing it if neccessary ???   I did get everything back together and all seems fine.  If it matters, I am ridning a 2001 Standard with 23, 000 miles on it.  Thanks in advance, Duke

Just walked out to the garage and looked. The nipple on mine points to the front of the bike.
The strainer on mine was stuck tight. Used a pair of pliers to get it out. It had to be replaced. Maybe they can removed without damage after soaking. I figured 11 years old it needed to be changed.

This shows the orientation you're asking about I think...

This describes an easy vacuum test to help make sure you're good to go before you
put your tank back on:

I bet the filter usually sticks in the gas tank, mine usually does. The filter costs about $12,
so it is easy to have a new one on hand. Yours will probably look like it just ate a early
persimmon when you get it out, but you can yank it out with needlenose, or something
you think you grab onto it with without hurting it, and if it doesn't have an obvious
hole in it, it is probably OK...

The VACUUM nipple on the petcock points forward  with the vacuum tube attached to it.  The other end of the vacuum tube attaches to the nipple on the intake tube for cylinder #6.  The VENT tube attaches to the vent tube nipple on the tank and goes over the top and behind the center cover.

Dear DragonRiders, Thanks for the prompt replys.  Sorry for the confusion, I did get the tank vent hose right.  The vent that I was talking about is on the petcock itself.  I used the same photo shown in one of the responses for reference.  It also appears to be pretty much the same on the petcock sitting next to the computer in the photo.  I also did the vaccuum test before reinstalling the petcock to make sure it was working right.  So I am fairly sure I got it right.  As to the strainer, I am going to order one so I have it on hand before I make another attempt at removing mine.  I had given it a pretty good tug but didn't manage to get it out.  Thanks again for your imput.

I used an extension from my 1/4" socket set.  It just fits inside the plastic tube.  Work it back and forth side to side as you pull out.  That would be the larger end of the extension.

The very small vent on the back of the cover set should point down. It is a tattletale. If your diaphram tears or splits  fuel will drip out of the vent. The large vent or tube is where your vac source hooks to the petcock.

Thanks, guys,

Thunderbolt - I never thought to try putting something inside the strainer to get it out.  Just grabbed a pliers and tried to pull it out from the inside.  Next time I have the tank off, I will try the trick with the extension.

Mr. Bubbles - I do have the tattletale vent pointing down.  Thought I had it right but feel better knowing its right.

Once again, thanks to all the DragonRiders for their imput.  Ride safe !
