Went into Mobile, AL today and one of the things I was looking for were socket head screws to replace the carb bowl screws. Hit Lowe's and Home Depot plus the the box car parts stores without any luck. Anybody have any idea where to get any? I'm dragging my I/S over to Warlock's so we can clean the carbs and get this thing on the road.
TIA, Marty

Ace Hardware generally has a pretty good selection of stainless metric screws. Even if it's an allen or phillips it'll work better then the OE soft aluminum Japanese sized phillips. Careful though, the stainless will be easier to over torque. Don't strip out those bowl threads.

Thanks DFragn. I've learned a gentle touch after my experiences with exhaust studs a few years ago.

I like to order from McMaster Carr. It takes a couple days but beats driving all around. Usually a good price. If you have a Fastenal store nearby, they should have them. Pricey.

Might have some at the local hardware store. If not I wouldn't worry too much. They usually come out pretty easy. David

xring....you are too going to worry about it...if you put those old stock screws back in, every time you walk by it you will think about them...you will find them for sure at either ace, or fatenall.

You misunderstood Goose. If I can't find them tomorrow, then I'm not going to worry about running myself ragged trying to find them before Wednesday morning.

I got mine at an Ace hardware....not sure they are all created equal, but most carry an extensive collection of metric hardware. Nice thing about them is you don't have to buy a box of 100 of each to get what you need.
I've found that if you don't have the proper JIS screwdrivers, then a properly sized Phillips and a pair of small, needle-nose vice grips to assist will help break free the bolts if they are stubborn. This takes the strain off the slotted area of the screw. Apply lots of downward pressure on the screwdriver and torque very slowly until you feel the "snap", then the screw will come out normally. A dab of antisieze will help for the next time.
One thing I also like to do is to replace the airbox and intake hose clamp screws with socket head allen bolts. This allows you to have a more positive "purchase" on the bolt and using a long, "T" handle hex key....makes tightening the rubber hose from the airbox to the carb a lot easier. These are also available at Ace (point of the story).
Good luck.

The stock carburetor screws are intentionally soft so to not strip the threads in the carburetor body, which is expensive to replace.
Socket head cap screws are either too short to work and the next size up is too long! Some have ground the screws and others have used extra washers to take up the extra length.
The proper screw driver tip is the best answer to the problem.
