While inspecting my tires today i noticed some fine cracks in the edge along the valley of the tread. It looks similar to dry rot (very small but still notoceabe) the tires are 1year old with 7500 miles look like new, always run at 42 psi and stored in a heated garage durning the off season WHAT THE I sent Avon an email but waiting to hear back. Anyone else run into this? I want to make sure all is well before the Huillbilly Highway ride.

Even though you might have bought it a year ago, sometimes dealers have them on the shelf for several years. If its a venom it was made more than 2 years ago, cobra less than 2 yrs. Sometimes if you have the dealer call the avon rep, you may get a new tire. Most dealers will do that because you will have to pay them to get it mounted ( but don't try to get them to fight for you and then you say your going to mount it yourself). I buy all my tires from the same independent dealer who took care of me when I bought a used Valk with a bad Avon. He told them how many Avons I have bought for bikes, and they shipped me a new one in 3 days. Also Avon reps get a budget for each month for tire replacements so if you can't get it right away keep the old tire and keep on Bitching every month till you get one. It is not OK. It is a defective tire build. There are two radial belts that are supposed to overlap the entire tire carcass. Those cracks show up because the radial belt shifted towards the middle of the tire during construction, leaving a weak area that flexes, creating the cracks. Avon shipped a tire, then paid a dealer of my choice to remount. Avon will try to pro-rate the tire based upon tread depth.

I had a Venom crack in the tread like that a few years ago. I took it to the dealer and they got it replaced no charge.

Had the same on a Cobra with under 2000mi. Avon waranteed it 100%, although they made me have it inspected by a dealer to confirm my report. The rep I spoke to told me they had some issues in the first production run.

Just order a replacement will have in time for the West Virgina ride next week. I will have a dealer inspect for verification to Avon and hope to get some if not all the coin for the new tire.

Had that happen with a rear Avon. I didn't hurry to replace it. One day I had to emergency stop when an SUV cut me off. I locked up the rear but was able to keep control of the bike. I went on about my way, parking for about 3 hours. Later when I got back to the bike the rear was flat. When I got the tire off I could see how the belt had separated from the tire - causing it to go flat. I could have made a fatal mistake waiting to take care of that tire - I recommend you do not make the same error.

Why do you guys keep buying those things? Bought a used IS once with Venoms on it. Had to add air every week on both of them, worst Valkyrie tire I ever had, and I've had them all except the Cobras. Wasn't gonna chance them after my Venom experience. None of them leaked air without a puncture except the Avons. Hoser (Thumbs down smiley goes here)

I now run Bridgestones instead.
36 front, and 38 back,, and I don't slide around like my fellow Wild Bunchers do.
Sometimes trying to make a tire last with extreme but within the operating range of pressures, will do just the opposite.
Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is the definition of what?

I gave up on Avons in the US but did buy the newer Cobra rear tire out here because I couldn't find anything else. I am very happy with the Cobra... super in the corners, plenty of rain traction and no build issues.

I run Avons regularly on my Valkyries and have had no problems. They've given me excellent performance and lives as longer than any others I've used excepting the Elite III.
Basing one's assessment of a product on a single (or no) experience is just as crazy as doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

About five years ago I was at Country Chrome shop in WV. Connie (VRCC member and owner) was looking at my bike and she told me she noticed the little cracks in the tread and that indicated belt problems as mentioned above. She said she'd give me a new one since I had bought it from her but installed it myself. She told me to get my fat rear end in the garage with the bike and they'd put it on! didn't charge a dime. this happened two other times and I took them off and took them to her and no question about replacing. Finally got a good one but what a great service from Connie and Hollie! Just a bad run I guess. Never had any more and really like Cobra on front. Now rear is a whole book..
