The short answer:  205/60/16  Try to get one with a symetrical tread and a "H" or "V" speed rating.  I like the Goodyear Triple Tread.

You can put on any tire you like, but bungie it down well or it will fall off the back seat as soon as you make a turn...

Best for who or what? SmokinJoe uses 205/55 sticky tires; great for twisties, not for treadlife. Daniel likes 205/60 or /55s, according to his blog; does tons of distance riding and writes books about it; no brand loyalty, but needs to look good and have good ratings. I have a 205/65 long life tire; good for distance, maybe up mileage a bit, probably not as good for hard cornering.

It's what you want it to do and your riding style. Like car tires on cars, different tires for different things (tho low profile Pirellis on a Hummer is just dumb!).

My personal favorite is the Goodyear Triple Tread 205-60.
Works great all around for me. YMMV.
