Please don't ask why I thought of this.

If you have the type of filter that comes with a protective cover, leave that on!  If not, put one on!!

While in my shed I looked down at my cycle and thought how ugly that black oil filter looks.  Then came the idea, what if I got some of that contact spray adhesive and some aluminum foil, what would it look like???  Yep, I tried it!  And actually it looks pretty darn good!!  First follow the instructions on the can.  Spray the adhesive. Start off on the top part of the filter, then on the dull side of the aluminum foil, wait till it gets tacky then carefully mate the two together.  That’s just the top.  Trim off the excess around the top then use the back of your finger nail to press out any creases, wrinkles, or air bubbles.  Now, do the same thing for the outer edge.  I precut my foil to fairly match the height of the filter.  Repeat the same process with the wrinkles as you did on top.

Believe it or not, the oil temp doesn't get hot enough to melt off the glue (or hasn't yet anyway)

I’m at work right now so give me a few days to get some pictures posted.

The chrome EMGO oil filters are pretty cheap, work good and would save you all that work. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good ideas all.
But if you want real cheap & easy.....

Put the Miller Lite on Kim's bike as that's her beer. I don't drink but due to diabetes I gotta go sugar free.  Sad As long as you drink the contents first {we did cooldude} it's free. Fits nice & snug on a Honda OEM filter but some cans may take a wrap of electric tape to be snug. If you can't get it off at filter change time..who cares! Get another. The Tropicana can is on it's third change.  uglystupid2
I get more questions & comments on the can covers than anything else.

I cut the can to fit filter and I have painted silver before installing, looks much better than black.  cooldude

The best part ever manufactured by Harley-Davidson is their Shock Cover (J&P #7000095 @ $18.99 for 2) which many of us use as a beautiful, functional oil filter cover.  Split the cost with a friend.  My neighbor bought my extra the very minute that I showed it to him and his oil filter is hidden.   laugh

Do you think the hd Shock Cover has enough extra depth to fit over the Purolator PL14610?

Doesn't look like it to me, but it fits the PL14612 (just put one on yesterday).

Dave I really don't think that it is long enough.  It would be close by using the clamping band also, but I am still hesitant to recommend it.  I have used the PL14612 for over a year (two filters) and from all I read it is more than adequate for the protection of the engine if changed at a reasonable mileage.  From what I gather Purilator filters are rated #1...JTL

The Harley shock covers lack about 5/8 to 3/4" of covering the PL14610. As Pharboy said, the clamping band makes up some of that but not all. I'm going to go back to the shorter filter at the next change. I change oil much sooner that the 8,000 recommendation so I don't figure I need the extra depth.

I have the walmart salt or pepper shaker cover on mine (stainless steel) but I don't know if they're still available.
