Ok I am sure there are plenty of Jokes about to be typed but here goes anyway.
My wife has said now that my I/S is fully paid off she will now be willing to ride with me, never did understand the reasons she gave me for not riding.... but whatever.
So we are planning a small trip from Bay area CA. to Las Vegas NV. and other than hand signs and yelling what parts do I need for driver to passenger communications on my I/S? I want to if at all possible use honda stuff and I don't want to pick up one of those chatter boxes or the likes. I am looking for easy and if at all cheap, I don't want to wire a bunch of stuff can't stand doing the wire splicing thing right now after all the work I just finished I don't want to get that deep again for a while.
Obviously I need head sets what will integrate with the I/S stereo? Do I have to have the CB unit for this? and is it VOX or PTT?
Part numbers would help greatly and is there a install instructions sheet anywhere?
Thanks in advance, Matt

First suggestion would be to get her her own bike. Sh should be happy and distracted enough to not want to talk to you while riding.
Second suggestion would be to take a loan out and use the bike for collateral so she doesn't want to ride with you, again this solves the problem of chatter while riding.
Third and reluctant suggestion would be to find the Honda part number 39245-MBY-003. this is the lead for the passenger headset.
I feel that option three will solve your issue, but will most likely be the beginning of new problems.

Option #1... not gonna happen, she has riden small bikes when she was a lot younger mostly offroad but she is in No WAY a rider or ever will be. and she would never spend the money on a second bike probably not even a second one for me. Tight wad! Option #2 Not fully understood, I have a second loan open line of credit against my home, how does being broke like I am keep her from riding with me? Option #3 That part comes stock on all I/S bikes that is just the lead from the radio unit the female side of the connector, I need what plugs into it directly. I need advice about what muy options are for mike and helmet speaker for rider to assenger communications.... P.S. I love my bride of almost 27 years now and I really like to talk with her while I drive, and she tells me she likes to talk to me also. Not sure how bad your relationship is but if your at all serious then that is a very sad situation my good man.

You need the headsets for the old style 5 pin connections. I bought some from j&m that were farely priced about 75 bucks a set. They work fine for us. The intercom is vox and you set the vol. with the left button on the top row on the intermost control box. You will also have to set the controller to the headphone mode, use the other (right) button on the top row.

Thank you Mr.Bubbles.
That is what I needed, mostly. Now I just need to figure out which set will work and fit the easiest for both our helmets. $75 each is about the limit I am willing to pay for this little convenience.
You wouldn't know the J&M part number or model number?

Neither one of us like having cords and being attached to the bike. We have a set of Scala Rider Q-2's which are Bluetooth sets. The upside is no cords and we can talk to each other off the bike too. The downside is your CB and radio have to be on speakers instead of running them through your helmet using the 5 pin connector.

We've had good luck with these and they have great sound. Plug in a MP3 player to the aux for music and the headsets when talking override the music. We've got our Garmin Zumo 450 loaded with 1000 songs and running through the aux you will get music, GPS instruction and voice to voice with the wife. Head sets beat the slap on the helmet or ribs being pinched when they want your attenion. http://www.edsets.com/

I purchased a couple of sets from the Honda store and they work great.
The radio plays through also and there is no wind noise due to the covers on the mikes'.
Only drawback is they mount, on and inside, the helmet which I don't need (helmet) to use here in SC.
I would like to find a setup where there is just some kind of wire spring that can hold the mike and ear phones and not need the helmet.
But mainly I wanted to say the Honda dealer has the correct items that work "plug and play" so there is no muss and fuss. The connections may be proprietary.

The connections are not proprietary. They're standard 5 pin DIN. I'm using J&M headsets and cords.

Your first question for yourself is how do you want to communicate?
Do you want to use the existing items already on your IS, and plug into them, or do you want a wireless/Bluetooth systems, which more and more people are going too?
To me, that took 2 years to answer. I still haven't actually answered it yet, but I did buy a used set of 2 Chatter Boxes that could plug into my (next) IS, as I also have an 82' GW they would work with too (turned out the GW didn't work, not need to fix that one).
I choose to use the existing system so I could listen to the radio over the intercom.
If I have understood all I learned about it, it is a VOX system. The IS PTT is for the CB only, not required for the intercom.
The advantage of a Bluetooth headset, is for wireless communication between other bikes (like a CB), and all the new hardware that is out there, like GPS, cell phones, etc, but there is a lot to learn. Seems there is a limit of how many can connect, like 3.
ps: My wife has always said we didn't need an intercom for talking, as we are able to communicate well enough right now as it is, for what little conversation we have. As for directions, she hits me to flow down, and tapes and points for us to go in another direction. Mostly it's just the hitting she does..

I have always used J&M headsets for many years. I ordered new helmets in January and had them install the Scala bluetooth headsets, to go wireless. Could not get the XM to go thru the headsets. Went back to J&M 259 Headsets. Try helmetshop.com good people to work with

Ok here is the current update. I purchased 2 units from WingStuff.com this was the best price I found anywhere online, trust me I spent 4-5 hours of my employer’s time searching for the best price. I ordered the least expensive J&M units, 1 for full face helmet for me and one for open face helmet for the wife. (She now has a modular flip up helmet as of this past Monday) and they work but they do seem to have a lot of his or wind noise, we have not tried them on the road yet just sitting still in the yard. The problem is the mike is just WAY to FARKING huge to fit between my face and the chin bar of my helmet. So I will be shipping them back come next Monday and ordering the ELITE series for flip up helmet for each of us since I just ordered a new flip up G-MAX GM56S for me with the wireless integrated helmet mounted brake light. I found a volume control for the passenger with a push to talk override so I only hear her when she wants me too. But this will allow her to adjust her own stereo volume when the music comes through the headsets at least this is what I gathered from a couple websites. They say this control unit does NOT require the CB to use all of its features, but of course there will be no CB available. A set of elite units and the required lower “Z” cord and the passenger control unit is going to run me a LOT more than I was planning to spend on this part of my upgrades. I will have to hold off a bit I have a VRCC member that is holding a special prize for me and I need to get him his money ASAP.
Yes Gordon, I want to use the factory wiring as much as possible seems like the easiest way to me.
Thanks guys for all the help.
