Probably everyone already knows about this, but at least i can add my name to the WELL SATISFIED CUSTOMER list. I bought Ken Heming's rebuilt alternator done with better than stock parts for $175 with core exchange. He is tops to deal with. Much better than buying the $600.00 one which is inferior.             hemi-roid@frontier.com    He does know what he is doing. Give his site a visit if you need one.

Stanley Steamer's MARS alternator is loud (make an annoying whirring sound) but it works well,
so far. The MARS guy said they whirr sometimes, and it is not a problem...

Mine has made that slight whirr for several years and 30,000 miles. I carried my old one for a spare the first year, but I got over it.

So far, satisfied with mine, doesn't make any noises that I can hear. Also haven't been on long trip with it since last summer either. Ken Hemming is MARS.

I bought one of Ken's rebuilt alternators about five months ago and it does still work well.  However, I sent the first one back to him for an exchange because it was so noisy!  I thought that it either had bad bearings or that I had not installed it correctly!  I borrowed a NEW OEM alternator and it was nice quite like it's supposed to be, just a low whirring sound.  I installed the second alternator that Ken sent and it was and still is somewhat quieter and I kept it.  However, I went back in and changed the drive dampers, thinking that maybe that little bit of slack in the dampers might have been causing the noise. No difference, still way noisy.  Tried the OEM again and again it was nice and quite!! It cost Ken an additional shipping fee for the second alternator and it cost me an additional $35. to return his first one.  So, over-all I can say that Kens rebuilt is still putting out 14.1 volts, but I still don't like all the additional noise, but I did save $150 or so.

I don't notice any noise on mine. For $175 with a warranty, I'll consider it a great deal no matter what. Now that I've changed it once, It should be easier if I  ever need to do it again.

Mine was a bit noisy and died after about 9 months of use.  I got the high output rebuild.  I have a simple voltage monitor on it and I saw when it failed and was able to get home before the battery was dead.  I had it setting on my shelf for over a year so way over warranty and I don't fault the MARS at all.  My buddy had his OEM fail at about 12K on it.  Sometimes things just fail.  I will probably send it back and have it rebuilt again sometime.
