Where do I loosen the tension on the throttle cables enough to remove them from the twist grip?  I tried loosening the nuts at the handlebar housing but that doesn't give me enough slack.

Sometimes its the simple things..........loosen the handlebar clamp and move the bars to the left.  Please put heavy padding on the tank so you dont inadvertantly damage the gas tank

Chris,

That doesn't appear to work for me.  That allows me to slide the twist grip and switch housing off the handlebars, but doesn't release any tension from the cables to allow them to be disconnected from the twist grip.  I need to disconnect the cables from the grip and remove them from the housing.

That won't work well enough to remove the cable barrel ends from the throttle grip. You can leave the bar clamps in place that will not loosen the cable within the shroud. Then the first thing to do is turn your cable adjuster (nearest the switch housing w/locknut) all the way in. That will release the tension on the cable itself. Then remove that barrel first. If that's not enough you'll have to do the same thing with the adjuster (double nutted one) at the carb bank. That will definitely give you the slack you need.

Reverse the order when you readjust the cable. 1st set the switch housing adjuster to mid point then (2nd) adjust the one at the carbs to your liking. Final (3rd) adjustment (fine-tune) is the back at the switch housing adjuster.

Careful not to kink a cable especially near the barrel ends.

DFragon,
Thanks.  The adjuster nut at the handle bar housing doesn't give me enough slack.  I found the adjuster at the carb bank.  Appears to be a real bear to get to.  Do I need to remove the gas tank, or just growl and cuss a lot until I get it?

Disconnect the cables from the carbs. Then you can take them off the throttle. Also install them first on the throttle and then connect to the carbs.

You might just be able to lift the tank, but taking it off is easier.

I was able to get it by just lifting the front of the tank about 2 inches.  I've also got V-stacks and had to remove the center stack to get to the cable adjusters at the carb bank.  I had to completely loosen and disconnect the outside cable at the carb bank, but also had to completely loosen the inside cable, but did not have to disconnect it.

Thanks  y'all
