I have a 98 Valkyrie that has been desmogged, but I am having a problem with oil gas contamination and I don't know what to do.  I am wondering if I should convert back to the vaccum petcock and system instead of trying to meter the fuel. My compression, if I am doing it right, is 30# because the cylinders got washed out with gasoline, I tried putting new oil in and still get the same effect with contamination. Once I get the bike running it seems to be ok, has power but when I check the oil it comes out in a light brown mix, severely contaminated. If my engine is shot please let me know, or if there is anything that can be done to save it. Any input would be nice.

I'd say the 1st thing to establish, is what is causing the contamination.

From there, then you can make a constructive decision on what to do next.

I doubt that any petcock could be the cause of severe gas contamination of the oil, unless it's allowing fuel to pass when the engine is turned off. If that's the case, you have the potential for hydrolock, which is real bad and real expensive.
I'm not sure what you mean by "meter(ing )the fuel".
I gather that you've replaced the OEM petcock? So you have no vacume line from #6 to the petcock?
You could have some stuck carb floats. You might try to tap on the carbs with the handle of a screwdriver, that could free them up.
Does it seem that all cylinders are firing? Does she idle OK?

.....a light brown mix.....?

Are you suggesting you have water mixed with the oil and it is a light  chocolate color?

have u drained the drool tube?  as it has been said, water makes oil brown, gas will not, gas will increase oil level and thin it out and u will smell gas on the dip stick.

Just a thought, when you did your compression test did you remove all sparkplugs and block throttle wide open? To get a good reading this needs to be done. After the test is done and if readings are still low pour a little oil (tbs full) in cylinder to be tested and see if reading rises if so rings are probably going south. You should have a strong smell of gas from oil fill hole or oil on dipstick if fuel is getting into oil system..   I've even taken a little oil that I thought might have gas in it and in a open area tried to light it with a lighter. If its got gas in it , it'll light very easily.

Humm,, something doesn't sound quite right.. I guess we need more info.. What petcock ?? Have you had a fuel-lock ?? Are you thinking you're getting enough fuel dilution to increase the lube oil level ??  Is the oil milky looking ?? Has the engine been overheated ??
First, run the engine for a few minutes.. Remove all the sparklers and block open the throttle.. Take your compression check.. If you're using a 'push/hold' in style [not a screw-in] then make sure you don't hear any leakage during the check.. Even if you don't open the throttle you'll be OK, the readings may be a little lower than they should be..

Sounds like a carb is having a problem with the float cut-off and allowing gas to drain into cylinder......sounds like you are darned luckyyou havent hydrolocked YET!  Stop riding it, dont even start it until you overhaul the carbs.  I too dont understand trying to meter the gas?  whats that??

personally iv'e never seen gas turn oil brown..it will thin it out considerably but never change it's color..sounds to me like your getting antifreeze in the oil.

Maybe something tragic happened, or jdiggyb1 may have to go on the 'list'.. It appears he may just be tugging on our chain..
